# Tous les hommes n'habitent pas le monde de la même façon

```ad-abstract
title: Summary
Cela fait deux ans que Paul Hansen purge sa peine dans la prison provinciale de Montréal. Il y partage une cellule avec Horton, un Hells Angel incarcéré pour meurtre. Retour en arrière : Hansen est super intendant a L'Excelsior, une résidence où il déploie ses talents de concierge, de gardien, de factotum, et - plus encore - de réparateur des âmes et consolateur des affligés. Lorsqu'il n'est pas occupé à venir en aide aux habitants de L'Excelsior ou à entretenir les bâtiments, il rejoint Winona, sa compagne.
Aux commandes de son aéroplane, elle l'emmène en plein ciel, au-dessus des nuages. Mais bientôt tout change. Un nouveau gérant arrive à L'Excelsior, des conflits éclatent. Et l'inévitable se produit. Une église ensablée dans les dunes d'une plage, une mine d'amiante à ciel ouvert, les méandres d'un fleuve couleur argent, les ondes sonores d'un orgue composent les paysages variés où se déroule ce roman.
Histoire d'une vie, Tous les hommes n'habitent pas le monde de la même façon est l'un des plus beaux livres de Jean-Paul Dubois. On y découvre un écrivain qu'animent le sens aigu de la fraternité et un sentiment de révolte à l'égard de toutes les formes d'injustice.
# Understanding Argument Styles Is The Secret To A Happy Relationship
Photographed by Refinery29.
The past couple of years have popularized the idea of understanding your [attachment style](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2021/07/10585433/attachment-styles-changed-the-way-i-date), identifying a partners perceived narcissism or ranking their [emotional intelligence](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/cutting-edge-leadership/201507/12-signs-your-partner-lacks-emotional-intelligence). But perhaps one of the most useful patterns in human behavior that we can apply to our relationships touches on a subject that is inherently fraught: how [we argue](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2022/01/10830031/fighting-fair-in-relationships).
The first thing to establish here is that arguing is perfectly common. Conflict is an inevitable part of life: we are all different and therefore do not all think in the same way or hold the same opinions. But the way in which we argue can drastically change [how we communicate](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2017/04/151534/sex-intimate-relationship-communication-tips) and understand one another, which has a knock-on effect on our relationships.
Holly Roberts, a counselor from the relationship support charity [Relate](https://www.relate.org.uk/), gives the example of someone who is confident and assertive having an argument with someone whos [a bit more introverted](https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2021/03/10361932/introverts-mental-health-covid-pandemic). "That kind of argument is always going to end in the introverted person feeling like they've lost because they couldn't express themselves well, while the other person may think theyve 'won' but actually it feels like an empty victory."
In scenarios like these, whatever issues youre arguing about are unlikely to be resolved as neither side is able genuinely to put their point across or hear what the other is saying. If the point of arguing is to try and make someone else understand what you feel, then, as Roberts explains, "When it becomes argumentative and conflictual, the point of the argument is lost, and it's just about he who shouts loudest."
This is why understanding the different argument styles can be key to learning how to communicate better and actually argue better.
In a workplace or business environment, argument styles are called 'conflict management' styles, [according to the Thomas Kilmann model](https://www.pocketbook.co.uk/blog/2017/09/12/kenneth-thomas-ralph-kilmann-conflict-modes/), and fall into five clear camps: competing, avoiding, accommodating, collaborating, and compromising. While these have very clear-cut definitions, [Beverley Blackman](https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counsellors/beverley-blackman), a psychotherapist and [Counselling Directory member](https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counsellors/beverley-blackman), suggests that there are various roles into which people fall in the context of a personal relationship.
"There are a number of different roles that people fall into during arguments, and often this argument style is formed early in life, generally through modeling by parents or other authority figures such as teachers," Blackman says. This role often becomes ingrained and unless we observe how we respond in times of conflict, we often remain unaware of it. While no one has a set role that they adopt all the time, we can loosely identify four main types.
**Attacking**
-------------
This argument style, which can also be described as "conflict-prone," relies on pointing out things that others are doing 'wrong' and is motivated usually by feelings of anger or annoyance.
"It can come across as aggressive and accusatory," Blackman explains, "[usually starting sentences with 'You...'](https://www.nbcnews.com/better/lifestyle/6-mistakes-you-re-making-when-you-argue-your-partner-ncna1131941) For example: 'You never put the washing away' or 'You always leave me to deal with the child's teacher.'" This argument style can certainly help you express annoyance and [anger](https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2020/12/10246396/2020-lessons-new-year) at your partner but it doesn't necessarily tell them what you want or need from them. And because it's accusatory and the accusations are about your partner's actions, it leaves them open to arguing back, which is when things can get heated. Because of this, attacking isnt always the best way to resolve conflict.
**Defensive**
-------------
This comes out in all scenarios, but particularly if you are on the receiving end of an attacking argument. In those instances it's natural to want to defend yourself and attempt to offer explanations or deny the accusations — usually stemming from a feeling of upset or rejection. "While defending yourself against an angry onslaught is a normal thing to want to do," Blackman says, "it is something that doesn't go very far towards solving the argument because these two styles are conflictual on a very closed, 'Yes-No' level, and leave little room for looking for resolution."
**Withdrawing**
---------------
Withdrawal can affect the argument in two ways, depending whether you [are being withdrawn from](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2021/07/10585433/attachment-styles-changed-the-way-i-date) or are the one withdrawing. If it's the former, there will often be an urge to pursue the withdrawer in order to keep making your point or to try and resolve the argument. The background emotion here, Blackman says, is "usually one of frustration or feeling unseen or unheard. While it's great to want to resolve the argument, the difficulty is that you are not paying attention to your partner's response or need to step away, so it is likely to heighten their emotion and make them more resentful towards you."
If you are the one who is [conflict-avoidant](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2019/01/219952/common-relationship-fights-issues), it usually stems from feelings of fear or anxiety. "You don't want to engage in the argument in any way and you will often want to emotionally detach from your partner if an argument is on the horizon. This can both frustrate and upset your partner. Again, it isn't the best way to resolve conflict, especially," Blackman adds, "if you fear that opening the topic up again later will result in your partner being angry again."
Roberts adds another iteration of withdrawing: when someone deliberately sits on the fence and remains passive. "They may still argue back but they will try and argue to keep the peace," Roberts says. This can mean agreeing with whatever you say and never attempting to get their own point across, which can add irritation to an argument.
**Open**
--------
And then of course there is the holy grail of argument styles: being open and able to consider the whole situation from different perspectives while remaining calm. "This encourages your partner to think about the conflict and the way you are both reacting," Blackman says, "and it is often productive if the partner feels listened to and understood — you may not agree with what they are saying but it helps if you can see their perspective. This serves to move the argument past the conflict phase and on to looking at ways in which you can both [resolve the difficulty](https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/how-to-communicate-argument-relationship)."
These argument styles are in no way fixed the one you are most drawn to is likely to be one you became familiar with through the adults around you in your formative years. However, the person you are arguing with and the context you are in can influence how you argue, too. The way you argue with a colleague or a boss will feel different from arguments with a partner or a sibling or a friend.
You can recognize the style youre most drawn to by noticing what is happening in your body during a conflict. Roberts says: "Try to almost press pause on what's going on and take a minute just to check in with yourself. Do you notice your heart racing? Do you notice your legs feeling twitchy because you want to run away from the situation? Do you feel so angry that you don't even know what you're saying?" Spotting these cues in your felt experience will give a clear indication of whether your response is driven by feelings of anger or anxiety or a desire to escape.
This can help you to [argue in a more productive way](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvkGdeAodvQ), which can, in turn, help your personal relationships. To do this, Roberts says, you have to be mindful of what you are feeling and saying and owning your own behavior. If you are conflict-prone, for example, and really want to ramp up into a big argument, you know that it is not the other person making this happen but you. "If I know that's me that's doing that and I'm owning this behavior, I have the capacity to change that, because I can change myself," Roberts says. "And if I understand it, then maybe I can be a bit more responsive or have a bit more flexibility."
This is particularly useful for relationships if you can identify the argument style of your partner, Blackman says. "While you will still get into arguments, you will both have ways of being able to dial down the emotions more quickly and be able to focus on the problem at hand," Blackman says. "If you can discuss your respective argument styles with each other (when you are both calm!) and explain how the other person makes you feel in an argument, it allows them to take it on board and consider it when it comes to conflict." This helps you find a mutual way forward and makes space for your own feelings without resorting to accusations or defensiveness.
Ultimately, the goal in an argument is to feel heard and understood. Stepping away from your instinctive argument response can create that space where you can feel heard and, crucially, [you can listen to the other person](https://hbr.org/tip/2015/09/if-you-disagree-with-someone-try-listening-not-arguing#:~:text=Next%20time%20you%20disagree%20with,and%20heard%2C%20offer%20your%20view.) as well, which will mean less time spent arguing and stewing, and more time spent enjoying each others company.
# What Is the Metaverse? A Beginner's Guide to Tech's Latest Obsession
A couple months ago, friends and business contacts started asking me for a crash course on my professional research studying virtual environments. Their interest reflects an explosion—which youve probably noticed—of noise and hype surrounding something called the “metaverse.”
This article is an introduction for a complete or almost beginner. Theres plenty of mainstream coverage on the topic, but it often conflates concepts: virtual reality is not the metaverse (though its related), and crypto/Web3 by itself is not the metaverse (though also related). Confusing, I know. Whether youre a businessperson or bystander, this is my best effort to lay everything out.
### **What Is the Metaverse?**
In 99.99% of cases, provided the term is used correctly, you could replace the word “metaverse” with “internet” and the sentence will mean the same thing. So why is everyone using this fancy new word? I think analyst [Doug Thompson](https://twitter.com/Dusanwriter) [said it very well](https://spatialreality.io/doug-thompson-a-beginners-guide-to-the-metaverse-and-why-it-matters-to-enterprise/) when he noted that “were using the term as a proxy for a sense that everything is about to change.”
So if the metaverse is just the internet—what about the internet is about to change? To answer that question, Ive broken this article into four parts:
1. **Spatial Computing** (What is that?)
2. **Game Engines** (What are those?)
3. **Virtual Environments** (Is that the metaverse? …_sort of_)
4. **Virtual Economies** (Please dont tell me I have to learn about NFTs…_you might_)
For those that want my definition of the metaverse up front, Id say: **The metaverse is the internet, but its also a spatial (and often 3D), game-engine-driven collection of virtual environments.** There is a lot missing from this definition (like avatars), but if youre like many people, that will already sound like a made-up buzzword salad.
Lets explore.
### **1\. Spatial Computing (and the History of the Interface)**
To understand the changes coming to life online, you have to start with the seemingly obvious way we currently access the internet: computers.
And to understand where were headed, you have to look at the history of computer interfaces. By computer interface, Im referring to the way that humans interact with digital machines to get them to do what we want.
We take for granted how easy and intuitive working with computers has become in our lifetimes, but it wasnt always so easy.
![](https://singularityhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/early-computer-colossus.jpeg)
One of the first computers, the Colossus Mark 2, was developed by the British to break German codes in 1943. Image Credit: [The National Archives via Wikimedia Commons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossus_computer#/media/File:Colossus.jpg)
In the middle of the 20th century, the “programming language” engineers used to get a computer to do things involved sticking their hands into the actual machines to wire cables. (Also, [most early computer programmers were women](https://www.history.com/news/coding-used-to-be-a-womans-job-so-it-was-paid-less-and-undervalued).)
Then engineers invented a new interface using punch cards, which allowed us to keep our hands to ourselves.
![](https://singularityhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/early-computer-programmer-punch-cards.jpeg)
Thank you sweet punch cards. Image Credit: [UNDP Ukraine](https://www.flickr.com/photos/undpukraine/6044505487)
After punch cards came command lines (like MS-DOS), which were a breakthrough because you could interact by typing words. But the real mainstream moment for computers was the invention of the graphical user interface (GUI). This is when working with computers came to involve clicking pictures and is what most of us take for granted as “just how they work today.” GUIs are now used in everything from ATMs to ticketing machines, and theyre the reason ordinary, non-programmer people like us can use them.
Why go through this history?
The point is that at every stage in the development just described, working with computers became easier, more accessible, and more people could use them.
Clay Bavor, at Google, [whose description](https://www.blog.google/perspectives/clay-bavor/virtual-and-augmented-realities-asking-right-questions-and-traveling-path-ahead/) of this history and insights I am borrowing here, puts it this way:
“Over the past several decades, every time people made computers work more like we do—every time we removed a layer of abstraction between us and them—computers became more broadly accessible, useful, and valuable to us. We, in turn, became more capable and productive.
Today, [the next great computing interface is emerging—it just doesnt have a good name yet](https://singularityhub.com/2017/05/21/the-next-great-computer-interface-is-emerging-but-it-doesnt-have-a-name-yet/). You may have heard about concepts like augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, immersive computing, or whatever two-letter acronym.
> [pic.twitter.com/r382y8wm7k](https://t.co/r382y8wm7k)
>
> — Hrafn Thorisson (@hrafntho) [September 27, 2021](https://twitter.com/hrafntho/status/1442601566972772356?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
What all of these concepts share is that they involve the use of three-dimensional space. That is a very big deal.
My colleague at Singularity University, interface designer [Jody Medich](https://twitter.com/nothelga), taught me just [how important 3D space is for the human brain](https://singularityhub.com/2015/08/04/3d-computer-interfaces-will-amaze-like-going-from-dos-to-windows/). Which makes sense. We are born into 3D space. We grow up living in 3D space. It would make sense that our brains and bodies are built to interact in 3D space.
So this term “spatial computing” is becoming a commonly used way to refer to these interfaces. Be careful not to conflate this with the metaverse, since many spatial computing people dont consider themselves to be involved with, or a part of, all this metaverse nonsense. But it is related, and well come to that.
One other way to think of this is to consider why we dont typically see grandparents playing video game consoles. It takes time to develop the motor skills to smash buttons on a controller in the right way. Similarly, we take for granted that at some point we had to learn the motor skills to type.
We do, however, [see more grandparents](https://www.google.com/search?q=grandparents+nintendo+wii&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiI67THkpj1AhVSqnIEHaa6Cr8Q2-cCegQIABAA&oq=grandparents+nintendo+wii&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzIHCCMQ7wMQJzIHCCMQ7wMQJ1AAWABg9x5oAHAAeACAAbsBiAG7AZIBAzAuMZgBAKoBC2d3cy13aXotaW1nwAEB&sclient=img&ei=40PUYcjtOtLUytMPpvWq-As&bih=631&biw=1428&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS895US895&hl=en) playing systems like the Nintendo Wii. You pick up a controller and swing your arms. Intuitive, easy, and anyone can do it. Thats a spatial interface. The big deal is that more people, including many more grandparents, could become comfortable using computers.
Generally, you should also think of spatial things as having the properties of _moving around in space_. In this sense, though not controlled using a spatial interface, a traditional video game like Fortnite is spatial (you move around), whereas a Zoom call is not. I dont want to complicate things, but spatial _audio_ is another thing too.
To explain why this matters, [I often use the example](https://singularityhub.com/2017/05/08/cybersecurity-pros-will-soon-patrol-computer-networks-like-agents-in-the-matrix/) of Protectwise (now a Verizon company). They build tools to help cybersecurity professionals detect threats to their computer systems. Typically, a cybersecurity person lives life inside dashboards looking at log files to sense whats happening. What if that data could be turned into a spatial environment? Now patrolling your companys computer system is like playing a video game. More people could do that since its more intuitive. Take a look:
Spatial computing like this is coming to life online.
### **2\. Game Engines: Construction Tools to Build the Metaverse**
Game engines may be one of the most consequential technologies of the next decade. I know that might sound a little crazy. But hear me out.
A game engine is the software tool developers use to build (and run) video games. In these software programs you can upload 3D objects, apply rules for how those objects can move, add sounds, etc. The Protectwise thing shown above was made using the Unity game engine.
In business, the term “video game” is also misleading, since it suggests something recreational or non-serious. But as the world becomes more digital, game engines are powering the computing interfaces for all sorts of industries.
Aaron Lewis [nicely points out](https://twitter.com/aaronzlewis/status/1291889682788253696), “…game engines are basically eating the world. Urban planning, architecture, automotive engineering firms, live music and events, filmmaking, etc. have all shifted a lot of their workflows/design processes to Unreal Engine and Unity.”
Take the new electric Hummer as an example; [the first car to have an Unreal-Engine-based interface](https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/7/21506572/epic-games-unreal-engine-general-motors-gmc-hummer-ev-human-machine-interface). The vehicle takes information from its sensors and visualizes it in 3D on the dashboard. This is spatial computing in the real world.
Another jargon-y term you might start to hear is “digital twin,” which is the idea that physical things (like a Hummer) can use its sensor data to create a software copy of itself inside a computer. This lets humans interact with simulated industrial objects as if theyre computers.
A [famous example](https://opengovasia.com/hkia-develops-digital-twin/) is Hong Kong International Airports Terminal 1 which uses a digital twin in the Unity game engine to give facilities managers a real-time view of passenger activity and equipment that might need repairs. Think of it like the terminals 3D selfie.
While theres more happening in the world of game engines than I can go into, there are two engines to know: Unreal and Unity. Unreal is owned by Epic Games, the publisher who owns Fortnite, and Unity is a large publicly traded company. (Personally, Ive only ever used Unity since its designed to be somewhat beginner-friendly.)
The last thing you should know about game engines is that they are going to see mind-bending levels of improvement this decade. You might not have seen the internet lose its collective mind over the demo release of the newest Unreal Engine 5, but everyone went nuts. For an approachable summary of why its a big deal, [Estella Tse](https://twitter.com/estellatse) gave me a really [clear explanation](https://singularityhub.com/2020/05/24/epic-games-insane-video-game-graphics-demo-explained-in-simple-terms/).
And if you have 20 minutes to spare, my classmate sent me this, and it blew my mind:
The takeaway is that this decade, graphics will stop looking like “graphics.” The limit for how high game resolution can be is falling away, and well see photorealistic virtual environments that look like real life. This means you should try to see past the cartoonish aesthetic todays metaverse coverage will put in your mind.
For example, imagine what that means for something like [Beyond Sports](https://www.beyondsports.nl/), a Dutch company that uses Unity and real-time positional data taken from sports to render live events as they are happening inside virtual reality. Picture this in 10 years—_walking around inside a game live with your friends_—and now were approaching what we might be doing in the metaverse.
And here we can introduce the first part of a good definition of what the term metaverse is pointing toward:
> The internet has been built by web developers, the Open Metaverse is being built by game developers.
If you start paying attention to it, youll notice game engines everywhere, which is especially true for…….
### **3\. Virtual Environments**
Now that weve introduced spatial computing and game engines, weve arrived where most mainstream coverage of the metaverse picks as its starting point.
Virtual environments are the “places” well be logging into in tomorrows internet. They are also a tricky thing to define. In many ways, Twitter and Discord (an online messaging platform) are already virtual environments where people meet and exchange messages and information.
The virtual environments Im exploring here, however, are the spatial ones built in game engines, and there are two kinds to explore. First is real-world augmented reality (think Pokémon Go).
The other is the more traditional online or purely digital virtual environments you have to sit down at a computer (or put on a VR headset) to access, though this distinction is arbitrary and already falling away.
Pokémon Go is a helpful example of AR in the real world. Its a spatial game, built using Unity, that overlays 3D characters on the physical world. Does that mean we can consider Pokémon Go to be part of the metaverse? Well yeah, sort of I guess, sure, whos to say (I guess _Im_ saying). The current definition is slippery. Were still in the “define your terms” stage, so be careful of that in the media.
In the future, it wont just be games—the entire physical world will be like a canvas we can [paint with data](https://www.forbes.com/sites/charliefink/2018/05/19/the-world-will-be-painted-with-data/?sh=7e4173335721).
To make this all happen, technology companies are scrambling to build whats referred to as [the mirrorworld](https://www.wired.com/story/mirrorworld-ar-next-big-tech-platform/) or AR cloud. These words mean the same thing as “digital twin” from earlier. Just extend the airport terminal concept to the entire Earth, and you have a tool to build virtual stuff on top of our everyday world. If you want to go deeper on this, I wrote [this article](https://medium.com/swlh/augmented-realitys-killer-app-transforming-how-we-relate-to-physical-places-4506fae0c91c) exploring its impact on society.
This is all another way of saying the internet is spilling out of our phones and computers and merging with physical reality—and its why that Hummer might be _part_ of the metaverse. See, for example, how Niantic (the company who publishes Pokémon Go), [market their technology to developers](https://lightship.dev/).
So, the metaverse wont just be random cartoon game worlds built by developers. It will also be digital replicas of very real spaces, likely the whole planet, and digital twins of industrial stuff like your car. It will eventually come to include sitting in your backyard with family members beamed in as avatars or putting on a VR headset to walk around other cities in real time.
Next, lets explore more traditional virtual worlds. Perhaps the most well-known example is a platform called Second Life, which was a huge phenomenon roughly 15 years ago and is still big today.
If youre not familiar, Second Life is a collection of virtual worlds built by users that you can explore as an avatar. Millions of users signed up, and lots of stuff happens there. Its also a good reminder that anytime you see the media claim that something is “the first” virtual-based whatever, thats very likely not true.
> — Sam W \[)-) (@vr\_sam) [January 7, 2022](https://twitter.com/vr_sam/status/1479381664212074497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
A very real economy exists in Second Life, where users buy and sell virtual goods and services, and it has its own currency; the [Linden Dollar](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/linden-dollar.asp).
Today, theres a whole suite of platforms that could be thought of as successors to Second Life. One of these, Rec Room, [just raised $145 million](https://techcrunch.com/2021/12/20/rec-room-raises-145m-at-a-3-5b-valuation-for-its-user-generated-immersive-gaming-platform/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAANoFh4VwvKVEbfB7kjpIgGI65TUsU1D3tECZdHm6KdfRLN_mhWnPskM_DUct4lLHPNSAeIt3N0DGgm04CPaBrouFq8xmh99eHMELYgFLqE9kvjM1cuL-yDfoWDlkcRC9PSqwRTiZVQZ_XKh1E0-GTxIVssYRU8eGZl29dNnZoFqE) at a $3.5 billion valuation; this stuff is getting serious. Other platforms include VRChat, Altspace, Decentraland, and Somnium Space, among many others.
Another trendy thing to do in metaverse-speak is talk about how games like Fortnite and Roblox are [fledgling metaverse experiences](https://www.theverge.com/2021/12/1/22811673/fortnite-party-worlds-islands-metaverse-social-space) (which is true). On the surface, they come masked as games, but underneath they are spatial environments where people meet up and increasingly go to Travis Scott or Lil Nas X concerts.
The ultimate vision of the metaverse is that all of these experiences (Beyond Sports, Pokémon Go, Fortnite, Roblox) will become an interconnected network of virtual environments—in other words, the internet, but for experiencing stuff.
My own journey into all this started several years ago on a platform called [Sansar](https://www.sansar.com/), originally launched by the same company behind Second Life. Here, my friend Sam is showing me around a space built by one of their users; Fnatic (one of the biggest eSports teams in the world). Im in a VR headset at home in San Francisco while Sam is in Los Angeles:
What struck me is that I was “walking around” with Sam _inside_ the internet. Also, here was a retail e-commerce site to buy clothes online. Just like the world wide web must have struck CEOs in the mid-90s as an oddity that may ([or may not](https://www.businessinsider.com/11-hilariously-wrong-internet-predictions-2013-11?r=US&IR=T)) be relevant for their business, todays CEOs are probably scratching their heads observing all this metaverse noise.
**I will say that just as most companies today have a website, at some point most companies will have a 3D virtual environment of some kind.**
With spatial computing, game engines, and virtual environments like these, were closing the gap between experiences you have in real life (going to a concert, hanging out with friends, etc.) and experiences mediated by a computer online. This is what concepts like _Ready Player One_ (a book by Ernest Cline adapted into a film by Steven Spielberg) are pointing toward.
And here we get our next helpful description of the metaverse:
> Make computers talk to each other, we get an Internet
> Make virtual worlds talk to each other, we get a Metaverse
>
> — jin (@dankvr) [November 23, 2020](https://twitter.com/dankvr/status/1330714833419862016?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
To tie it all back together **the metaverse is the internet, but also a spatial (and often 3D), game-engine-driven collection of virtual environments.**
And just as todays internet has absorbed vast portions of our economic activity, tomorrows metaverse will consist of massive…oh no, please not NFTs…here it comes…
### **4\. Virtual Economies (…and NFTs)**
One of my favorite statistics is that Second Life still supports an annual economy worth roughly $500 million ([that number has grown during the pandemic](https://qz.com/1976147/non-fungible-tokens-boosted-second-lifes-economy/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter)). The GDP of Second Life is larger than the economies of some real-world countries.
Fortnite, a game that doesnt cost a penny to play, [still earned $9 billion](https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/3/22417447/fortnite-revenue-9-billion-epic-games-apple-antitrust-case) in 2018 and 2019. How? They sell in-game stuff for players to express themselves in a variety of ways including virtual clothing, dance moves, and other items. In some ways the metaverse is just a giant virtual fashion industry.
If that sounds silly or weird, just think about how someone carefully plans what clothes to wear or what profile picture to use on LinkedIn. We care about how we express ourselves in the world. If were going to spend an increased portion of our time online, its not so silly to expect people will want to [buy expensive Gucci bags to carry around Roblox](https://hypebeast.com/2021/5/virtual-gucci-bag-roblox-resale).
So where do NFTs fit into all of this? Among other uses, NFTs offer the infrastructure to let people take custody of this virtual stuff.
> NFTs are internet-native property rights
>
> — Fred Ehrsam (@FEhrsam) [March 9, 2021](https://twitter.com/FEhrsam/status/1369350597607120901?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
I hate to do this, but its worth taking one giant step back to unpack what an NFT actually is.
The first thing to note is that NFTs run on blockchains. A blockchain is really just a fancy Excel spreadsheet that keeps track of who owns what (like what a bank does to keep track of who owns what money). Today, we rely on centralized authorities like banks to keep track of how much money is in which accounts as cash is shuffled between people and businesses. The idea behind a blockchain is that everyone just gets a copy of the same spreadsheet, and the big deal/breakthrough is that through complicated cryptography (which is _where the “_crypto” in cryptocurrency comes from) all those spreadsheets communicate and agree about which transactions are legitimate.
No more needing central trusted authorities. No way to hack, change, or mess around with what the spreadsheet says.
NFT stands for non-fungible token. The key word is fungible which just means you can exchange something for an equivalent version, and it will be equally valuable (bitcoin is fungible because it doesnt matter which bitcoin you have— they are all equally valuable). Non-fungible is the opposite: each item is unique. This is why were seeing a lot of digital art being bought and sold using NFTs. NFTs use blockchains to determine who owns what.
This shift toward a [decentralized way of managing life online](https://singularityhub.com/2021/09/19/how-to-embed-trust-into-the-foundations-of-the-internet/) is called Web3 (a word youll hear more and more and [is worth getting to know](https://www.wired.com/story/web3-gavin-wood-interview/)).
Lets use a real example. Maybe you saw the front page of _The Wall Street Journal_ this summer when an [NFT for a digital image sold for $69 million](https://www.wsj.com/articles/beeple-nft-fetches-record-breaking-69-million-in-christies-sale-11615477732).
Let me save you $69 million and [share the link](https://ipfsgateway.makersplace.com/ipfs/QmXkxpwAHCtDXbbZHUwqtFucG1RMS6T87vi1CdvadfL7qA) where that images file lives online. You can save it to your computer, and now you also own the file. Right? Well, kind of, but not in the sense everyone cares about.
![](https://singularityhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/nft-beeple.jpeg)
Most media coverage doesnt explain this, but most NFTs are not the thing itself; in this case the JPEG file. The NFT is the token associated _with_ the metadata that points at the thing. [Heres the metadata](https://bafybeiamjvnjv7pb2pzfpuy5mgb6atofqxv65p34nj77mjo5vf5t3cvhfm.ipfs.dweb.link/) for that NFT, by the way. There is something called an “on-chain NFT,” but we wont go there.
![](https://singularityhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/metadata_nft.jpeg)
Think of an NFT as the receipt. Heres the metadata a rich person now owns as a token (the NFT) on the Ethereum blockchain, which points at that JPEG you and I just looked at.
The reason NFTs and the metaverse are conflated so often is that theres an expectation that they may power these virtual economies by acting as the infrastructure mediating the exchange of information and assets online.
To be clear, this is not yet a universally agreed upon idea. Second Life, Fortnite, and plenty of other platforms have been doing just fine _without_ NFTs. But one reason NFT/crypto is one of the noisiest places on the internet is because its fast-paced, novel, and supported by an absurd amount of money.
I dont mean that in a negative way; but this area is the unmapped, build-it-as-we-go, unsettled frontier of life online. There are some fascinating projects at the front end of this, but whether NFTs do or dont power some dematerialized system of capitalism misses the point that NFTs are likely more important than just “owning stuff.”
> “nfts are just database entries”
Now we can tie together everything weve learned about the metaverse and review a recent scene from an online event to explore the way NFTs might play a role.
Here is the [Metaverse Festival](https://themetaversefestival.io/) (yes, a real thing) that was headlined by performances from global stars like Deadmau5. It happened in the browser-based [Decentraland](https://decentraland.org/) (**a spatial, game-engine-driven, virtual environment**).
Its Friday night, and you head to the nightlife district of Decentraland (_a plot of land which is an NFT_). To get in you must be of age. You carry an identity token (_which could be an NFT_), to verify your eligibility for entrance.
You notice someone wearing a hoodie (_an NFT_) [from RTFKT](https://singularityhub.com/2021/12/22/nike-just-acquired-an-nft-studio-to-make-digital-sneakers/), a virtual apparel company [recently acquired](https://news.nike.com/news/nike-acquires-rtfkt) by Nike. Those are expensive, Im told.
Its free to enter, because the event is sponsored by Kraken, who wants to be the cryptobank of the metaverse. By attending, youre issued whats called a “proof of attendance protocol” token, or POAP (_that is an NFT_).
Later, when you sign up at Kraken, they offer a discount to those who can show, with that token, they attended the event.
Metaverse or no metaverse, [as John Palmer explains](https://j.mirror.xyz/k0yCgq0bjgn2X0AujhwjKIYk4SDBpdNayjU5_E8Wm4I), NFTs mean the internet becomes a place where everyone has an inventory. Earlier we mentioned the metaverse is an interconnected collection of experiences, and if thats the case, you might want to carry your single identity, history, and inventory of assets around with you. If that sounds familiar its basically giving users back their own cookies and personal data from big companies. I dont want to go there; but its why a lot of people are worried about Facebook/Meta building a centralized metaverse instead of one that is open and decentralized.
Ive gone way down an NFT rabbit hole here, but its worth stitching together the spatial computing/virtual world developments with whats been happening in crypto/Web3. When I started this research seven-ish years ago, crypto people were far away and somewhere else. Today, I now have to explore Web3 stuff too, since these areas are merging.
### **. . .**
If youre still here—thank you—you might still be wondering: So, what? How does any of this meaningfully improve anything about the world, or even the internet? How is any of this better than what we have today? Honestly, fair point.
Lots of people will have points of view, and I wont advocate one perspective or another. But I do have a personal anecdote.
At the start of my MBA program, the UK government had implemented a rule that no more than six people could be together indoors. For 300 zero-chill/connect on LinkedIn business students, thats a tough start to the year.
We even tried a full Zoom call with all of us.
![](https://singularityhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/mega-zoom-call.jpeg)
Dear god, no. Please send in the metaverse.
My classmates will remember me as that kid who threw some weird internet house party using a platform called [High Fidelity](https://www.highfidelity.com/). It employs spatial audio, so you only hear the people clumped around you. It took some getting used to but was a reasonable way to get 150 of us, as basic 2D avatars, moving around in a shared online space.
What the metaverse enables, through dimensional space, is a way to replicate _some but not all_ natural human behaviors, which you cant replicate in existing online spaces such as Slack, Discord, or Zoom. There are times you want the magical chaos of unplanned social interaction mediated by “personal space.”
In the professional world, Im endlessly fascinated by [this company which runs](https://singularityhub.com/2018/07/08/inside-a-1-billion-real-estate-company-operating-entirely-in-vr/) a 60,000-person organization from inside a virtual world built in Unity. The founder of that software company tells me that when you have to actually walk your avatar from meeting to meeting, theres opportunities for chance encounters youd never get jumping from Zoom to Zoom.
[Ive also used that same software to run learning programs](https://www.su.org/blog/learning-in-spatial-3d-environments), and likewise, there are “moving around the room” type learning activities I could never run using Zoom.
Additionally, the metaverse might grow to become a more intuitive internet. Just like spatial computing interfaces are easier to use, websites may become like walking into physical stores, something our brains and bodies might better understand.
But it goes without saying, we wont replace real-world experiences nor should we want to. We also wont stop using todays platforms, like video-conferencing. The metaverse is just the evolutionary next stage of the internet, and offers a new suite of communication tools that will be more helpful for some things and less for others.
To conclude: this is all a long-winded way of saying the metaverse is the internet. But spatial. And built with game engines. And probably NFTs. And who knows where that takes us…
# My First 5 Minutes On A Server; Or, Essential Security for Linux Servers Sol Love
Server security doesnt need to be complicated. My security philosophy is simple: adopt principles that will protect you from the most frequent attack vectors, while keeping administration efficient enough that you wont develop “security cruft”. If you use your first 5 minutes on a server wisely, I believe you can do that.
# 6 ways companies screw up their global expansion
Global domination, headquarters in exotic locations around the world, exciting business trips, and client meetings at sushi bars in Tokyo or paella in Madrid. Growing your [startup](https://thenextweb.com/topic/startups)internationally has plenty of benefits and earns you the title of Global CEO — but getting there is no easy feat.
When your home market is locked in and you start looking further afield for your next target, it can be easy to think you have your playbook setup already. However, once the reality of having to select the RIGHT market, hire local talent, and face cultural nuances hits home, its easy to feel overwhelmed. This is a particular challenge for European startup [founder](https://thenextweb.com/topic/founders)s who want to make it big.
Gernot Schwendtner, co-founder of weGrow International explained:
> In Europe, international expansion is key to growth. US-based companies have a larger market to develop in without the headaches of expansion, so what we see is that EU startups need to go international earlier, in order to gain comparable traction.
At weGrow International, weve worked with more than 1,000 founders on 200+ expansion projects. We support startups and scaleups in their international expansion, not only on strategy; we roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty. Thats why weve combined brainpower with TNW to identify the pitfalls most common to an international expansion, regardless of the destination. Adam Warren, senior program manager at TNW says:
> TNW has helped startups relocate to Asia, the US, the Middle East, and across Europe. The usual line up of strong preparation, research, and the right timing are good signals for startups, but not always enough.
>
> Often the ones who really flourish are the companies who come with their own strong, sometimes quirky goals like working with local experts to adapt their technologies, or tuning into key national trends that will see their presence take hold rapidly. If you find that unique hook that gets you excited, its a very good sign.
International expansion can be your key to growth, but the path to world domination is long and winding. There are many roads to success, but failures tend to have a lot in common.
Weve seen plenty of creative ways to fuck up your international expansion, but for the most part they fall into 6 common categories:
_\*Company names have been changed for anonymity_
1\. You dont choose the right target market
--------------------------------------------
This is KEY. Your product wont sell in a market where there is no demand. While that may seem obvious, there are plenty of ways to make a mistake.
A Scandinavian company providing warm, catered lunches for offices was looking for a new market. The Netherlands seemed a natural fit for expansion, with a dense population and offices often located in secluded parks. Except. _The Dutch dont eat warm lunches._ Which they didnt find out until after the expansion began.
The moral of the story? **Pick your destination wisely**, and **develop a validation strategy** to ensure your assumptions are correct.
2\. You dont know your markets nuances
----------------------------------------
There are actually quite a few ways to get this wrong. Danish company X had a completely flat hierarchy, meaning interns get an equal vote alongside founders. But, in Germany, its a very different story. Decision-makers want to hear from their equals. So when the company sent interns to sell to German CEOs, they werent taken seriously and it was a flop.
Moral of the story: know how to **gain the trust** of decision-makers, and be ready to **meet them on their terms**.
![Image showing business miscommunication. One man bowing while the other goes in for a handshake.](https://cdn0.tnwcdn.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2022/02/Cultural-Miscommunication-photo.jpg)
3\. You dont hire in time
--------------------------
When youre expanding internationally, you either need to leave the home base operations in the care of a trusted team member and open the new market yourself, or you need to hire someone senior on the ground. This requires more than just interviews.
American company Z needed to source a senior manager for their soon-to-launch French office. In the US, its common to give two weeks notice at a job, and thats how they based their timeline. What they didnt realize is that, in France, the notice period can be months. Their expansion was delayed almost a year.
**Map your timelines** and dont let this happen to you!
4\. You miss a golden opportunity
---------------------------------
Covid is the elephant in everyones room how will it affect your business in the long and short term? Our [Scaleup Resilience Report](https://docsend.com/view/cfkmz68477q9cwtb) dives deep into this. One of the biggest missed opportunities we saw was when companies sidelined international expansion due to market disruption. Loss aversion can be powerful when contemplating expansion.
If youre one of those who fear the pain of loss more than the uncertainty of acquiring equivalent gains, you might be missing out on tactical advantages: investment opportunities, access to governmental aid, team diversification, and more. Being internationally present during market disruption pays off.
During the first lockdown, a US company prepared for their German expansion — all the way from strategy to lining up a team in the new market. When the markets opened up again, they were the first ones moving and were able to capitalize on their preparation and planning.
5\. Your strategy is inflexible
-------------------------------
When youre a startup, flexibility is often your middle name, its how you do business. But as you grow, its harder to be nimble. For example, youre probably familiar with the sunk cost fallacy (a reluctance to abandon a project youve invested heavily in, even as losses are growing) but its much harder to see it when its up close.
Coming from France, Company X was certain that the best new market for them was going to be the UK. They hired a country manager before establishing a good product/market fit, and invested heavily in local media. A year later, they exited the market with almost no sales and heavy losses because the market was a poor fit.
Moral of the story: **pace your scaling strategy** and **stay flexible**. Treat your strategy as a living, breathing document, even as you grow.
6\. You dont adapt your brand
------------------------------
Theres a famous anecdote about a big American car producer trying to enter the Latin American market with a proven seller, an economical sedan whose model name was Nova. But, in Spanish, “no va” means “doesnt go,” so not a single car was sold.
This may or may not be true, but it illustrates an important point: your brand may make total sense in your home market, but translate very differently in new ones. A new market is an opportunity to redefine yourself while aligning with the needs of your new local customers. Youve likely already had to adjust your product/market fit, so do the same with your brand!
Of course, its easy to point out what not to do, and hindsight is 20/20. But if you flip these stories on their head, you can see some major takeaways. Strategizing and doing your homework are critical success factors in expansion planning. Knowing the culture of your target market, and having self-awareness regarding your own brand establishes a strong foundation to create a positive interface between the two. Maintaining the flexibility that got you where you are today will always be an asset.
Planning for an international expansion can be intimidating. It feels like there are a million boxes to check and there are only so many hours in a day. If getting from where you are now to that moonshot goal seems like too much of a stretch, consider finding a partner who can help you get there.
The best place to start is at the beginning. How ready are you really? weGrows latest tool, an [Internationalization Expansion Readiness Assessment](https://wegrow.outgrow.us/wegrow-GRR) can give you a quick overview of the qualities weve defined as strong predictors of success during an expansion journey. Take a look and give us a ring. We also recommend reading [The Culture Map by Erin Meyer](https://www.amazon.com/Culture-Map-Breaking-Invisible-Boundaries/dp/1610392507) before any international expansion. Its a great guide for navigating cultural differences, both in business and personal life.
If youre looking to expand to Asia and the Middle-East and need a helping hand during the process, TNW has a number of programs to fit your needs. Keep an eye on our [opportunities page](https://thenextweb.com/programs/opportunities) for the next editions or our Singapore Travel Accelerator program and more.
