# 'Not today': The twin miracles of Palm Beach - The Sunday Long Read
#### The pilot went unconscious at 10,000 feet. Neither of the passengers had ever flown a plane. For them to survive, it would take a miracle. Or two.
Shortly before noon on May 10, 2022, the Cessna Caravan, bound from Marsh Harbor in the Bahamas to Fort Pierce, Fla., was cruising comfortably at 12,000 feet. The planes airspeed was good—180 knots—and Fort Pierce was just 30 minutes away.
The weather that morning was spectacular—so clear, crisp and sun drenched that Ken Allen, the 64-year-old pilot, took out his phone to record video from the cockpit window. All these years on, being airborne over the Atlantic could still take his breath away.
There were two others aboard the turbo prop aircraft, a model of plane known for its rugged durability and one that could hold as many as 14 passengers at maximum capacity.
“The Caravan aircraft,” reads its online promotional material, “delivers the rare combination of high performance, low operating costs and ability to adapt to a wide variety of missions.”
Russ Franck, Allens lifelong pal along for the picturesque flight, sat in the other cockpit seat. Franck was not a pilot himself, and over the years had declined Allens occasional offers to briefly take control when he was flying in Allens much smaller private plane. Hed only been in the Caravan once before, and so he was good company, not much more.
That said, Franck had complete trust in Allen. His friend was careful, organized, meticulous, the obsessive, protective sort who insisted absolutely no one but he wash his car.
“The kind of guy you want to be your pilot,” Franck said.
Darren Harrison was the other passenger, seated in the second row of seats on the right side of the plane. Allen had been enlisted to fly Harrison and others down to Marsh Harbor and back to do some sport fishing. Harrison had caught a couple of fishdolphins, but none of the Blue Marlins he was hoping for.
Harrison that morning was also taking pictures with his phone, though not of the view out the cockpit. He was taking shots of the inside of the plane. He wanted his pregnant wife Brittny to be reassured the plane was big and comfortable, safe for her to fly in. Maybe theyd work in an adventure in the three months left before the baby was due. In a fishing shirt and shorts, Harrison took a photo of his feet in flip flops propped on the facing, spacious seat in front of him.
There was good reason for Brittny to be anxious about taking risks. She and Darren had struggled for a long time to get pregnant after their wedding in 2018. An initial round of in vitro fertilization efforts had failed, too. But the second swing at in vitro, as Darren liked to say, produced a home run, a healthy, developing girl. Brittny wasnt interested in taking unnecessary chances.
Harrison, then, had not told Brittny about a brief hiccup that had happened on the flight to Marsh Harbor days earlier. There were half a dozen folks on the plane that Thursday—Harrison, Allen, as well as Harrisons friend Philip Weikert and his wife and child.
Weikert was the planes owner—his grandfather had been General Douglas MacArthurs personal pilot—and would be fishing along with Harrison. Weikert was a licensed private pilot, but only whats called “instrument rated,” and he was always looking to get more flight hours under his belt. Allen, serving as instructor, was overseeing Weikerts approach for landing at Marsh Harbor.
Allen had to caution Weikert. The plane was coming in hot.
“Watch your air speed, Philip,” Allen said into his headset.
Harrison, who had never flown himself, or been very intrigued about trying, liked to wear one of the extra headsets during flights. He got a kick out of listening to the chatter.
“Hey, stupid question,” Harrison said through his headset. “Were in a fucking airplane. Why do we need to watch our speed? Theres no damn cops.”
Air speed, of course, was everything in flying—making it both possible in the first place, and often dangerous in the end. Fly too slow, and you risked stalling, and falling out of the sky. Flying too fast carried its own deadly perils.
“Whats the worst that can happen if you go too fast?” Harrison again pressed Allen.
“We rip our wings off,” Allen answered, “and we are a lawn dart.”
Lawn dart? Harrison said to himself. Oh, right.
On May 10, at 11:48 a.m. on a safe and gorgeous day to fly, the Cessna Caravan, Flight No. N333LD, was directed to drop from 12,000 feet to 10,000. The Florida coastline would be coming up soon.

## **“Do your homework”**
Bobby Morgan, a veteran air traffic controller at Palm Beach International Airport, was not supposed to work on Tuesday May 10. But a colleague had called Monday night. His kid was sick. Could Morgan take his shift the next day?
Sure, Morgan said. It meant overtime pay for him.
And so Morgan reported the next morning for his eight-hour tour—7:30 a.m. to 3:30 in the afternoon. He read the weather reports, which called for clear skies. There were, however, gusty winds, approaching 30 miles per hour, and as a result the airports runways had been set up so that planes would land or take off going from west to east.
Morgan, who was 20 before he ever traveled on a commercial airliner, loved being in the air and as a young man got his pilots license and a degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, graduating in 2001, just months before 9/11. The terrorist attacks convulsed the airline industry, and pilot jobs would prove hard to come by. Morgan began to consider work as an air traffic controller, a job hed once promised himself hed never do. He was stocking shelves at a Publix supermarket, after all, no time for being terribly picky.
The working conditions for air traffic controllers were notoriously fraught and unrelenting:staring at radar screens in small, dark rooms, the everyday stakes literally life and death. Of course, there were satisfactions, too—maintaining order, keeping people safe.
“The pilots are the drivers,” Morgan was fond of saying. “Were the cops.”
If his dreams of becoming a commercial pilot were dashed by 9/11, Morgan nonetheless was determined to fly. He got his license, and was in the air as often as he could be.
“Its like a runners high,” he said of the rush of flying. “The only thing that stops you is money.”
In his first months as an air traffic controller, Morgan was sent to Greensboro, N.C., the aim being to get his legs under him at a smaller airport. One day early on, he also got an introduction to the limits of the job.
A family of three in a private plane was struggling to land in heavy cloud cover. Officials at the airport knew Morgan was a pilot. They thought he might be able to coach the family down. The autopilot on the plane had failed, and the father at the controls was just not capable of flying in the dense clouds. There were clouds as low as 200 feet, circumstances that would have challenged the most seasoned pilots. Morgan couldnt help much. The plane ran out of gas and crashed.
“Theyre yelling as theyre going down,” Morgan recalled of the family.
No one survived.
Morgan later on got certified as an instructor, paid to teach others how to conquer both fear and cockiness. Inexperienced pilots, he said, tend to rush—failing to check the weather or if an airports runways are closed. He said they often “like to kick the tires, jump in and go.”
And so to those he was teaching, Morgan would preach his simple gospel: “Do your homework, dont take chances, be conservative.”
It wasnt a bad blueprint for work as an air traffic controller. Not that it had ever fully settled Morgans daily dose of nerves.
“You always feel like youre missing something,” Morgan confessed. “If I put somebody out on the runway, Im just always looking around. Is somebody going to land on top of this plane?”
It might surprise or even frighten some people, he said, but air traffic controllers make mistakes all the time.
“Even the best,” he said.
By 11:30 a.m. on May 10, Morgan was four hours into his shift, halfway through a day he had not expected to work. The routine at Palm Beach International was to work an hour, then get a half hour break. There was a courtyard outside the control room. It was called “the prison yard,” but in truth, there were patio chairs, even a hammock. It was comfortable enough. Morgan took a seat, kicked his shoes off, and cracked open a book: a Federal Aviation Administration handbook on flying float planes, aircraft capable of landing on water.
“Do your homework.”
Morgans first article of faith.

## **“I aint dying today”**
Ken Allen, who lived in Lake Wales, Fla., was flying the Cessna Caravan first to Fort Pierce because everyone had to clear customs before heading home. He and Franck would fly the rest of the way to Lake Wales; Darren would be off to his home in Lakeland, armed with his photos of the planes interior.
Allen had been flying for more than three decades, and hed always been happy—sometimes for free, sometimes for a modest fee—to shuttle people up and down the state and to the Caribbean, folks looking to hunt, fish, vacation, get to a business meeting. He owned a couple of planes himself, and he and his wife of 32 years would make their own share of trips—to her family in Alabama or to their vacation home in the Florida Keys, a six-hour trip in the car cut to 90 minutes in the air.
Allen was a Florida boy through and through. His parents, high school sweethearts, had worked together at Weeki Wachee Springs, one of Floridas earliest tourist attractions, his mother one of the performing mermaids. His dad wound up in the oil business, and Allen would follow him, though it was not a straight route. Hed first spend seven years as a paramedic, responding to fires and accidents, delivering babies, saving lives, and, once, standing silently over the ruins of a small plane crash.
“You see a lot of people at their worst: suicides, drownings, a fender bender that snaps someones neck,” he said. “But you also find out real quick how tough the human body is. Ive seen people be in motorcycle or other wrecks that you would not think they could survive. And yet they walk away.”
Allen, who did not start flying until he was in his late 20s, had managed to keep himself safe in the air. Controlling the plane had come instinctively; what his early training had provided most importantly was “what not to do to get yourself in trouble.”
Not that hed dodged trouble altogether. Once, flying with his wife, the fuel pump failed, and Allen had to navigate his way 200 miles to safety. His closest brush with true disaster involved a landing when his engine failed and he barely avoided, well, becoming a lawn dart.
“Rolled to a stop and sat there for about five minutes, hands shaking,” he remembered of his landing. “It scared me to death.”
By 11:50 on May 10, Allen had completed his descent to 10,000 feet. Minutes later, at 11:58, Allen suddenly told the others he didnt feel great. He reached for his breakfast bar and a drink. Maybe he was dehydrated.
Franck doubted Allen was making a joke. When he saw Allens forced, seemingly frozen half smile, he knew he wasnt. Panicked, Franck managed to say, “Stay with us, Ken.”
Harrison, though, concluded Allen “was already out—gone.”
Allen, in slumping to his left, inadvertently turned off the autopilot switch.
“This aint fixing to be good,” Harrison thought to himself.
Then another thought… “Not today. I aint dying today.”
With that, Harrison, having kicked off his flip flops, was out of his seat and scrambling barefoot toward the cockpit.
The plane had gone into a steep righthand dive. The Cessna Caravans maximum speed was 190 knots. Anything faster could result in structural damage, and with it, catastrophe.
Falling hundreds of feet a second, the Cessnas speed hit 295 knots.
Harrison could feel the force of the dive on his face—it seemed as if it was blowing his cheeks back. When he reached Allen, he looked out the cockpit windshield. All he saw was water.
Allen was not slumped forward, but to the side. From behind the pilots seat, Harrison reached over and grabbed the yoke. Franck had a yoke in front of him in the right cockpit seat, and he grabbed it.
Harrison could be good in a crisis. Hed been in a car with his parents, returning from closing on his first home, when they came upon a man on the side of the road trapped underneath a Dixie Chopper commercial mower. Harrisons father had just had surgery, and so he would be of little help. Harrison and his mother wound up rescuing the man, managing to lift the mower off him. A Life Flight helicopter took the man to the hospital, and he survived.
Harrison, who spent much of his boyhood on a four-wheeler, would prove good at working with machines. He handled all the repair work for the equipment in his first company—a lawn care outfit. And he was adept with the hand tools needed to lay floor when he went to work for his dads home interior company.
“My dad would always kid me, tell me I could literally jump on any piece of equipment and figure it out,” he said. “And I was like, I mean, its not that hard. Its just a couple of fucking controls and a steering wheel and gas pedal. The mentality Ive always had is that everything operates the same.”
Now, reaching over a potentially dead man, and speeding to a crash in the ocean, Harrison did what he could. He remembered Allens talk of wings breaking off. He actually wasnt sure the planes wings were still on. But if he had any hope, he quickly calculated, hed have to pull the plane out of its dive slowly—level off, or come close.
“Flatten out,” he said, “even if were still going down.”
The plane had fallen 3,500 feet, before the harrowing descent ended.
“Were in deep shit,” Franck recalled thinking. “Im going to have to fly this plane because I doubt if Darren knows that much about it.
Any chance required getting Allen out of the pilots seat. Harrison would do it, but he needed Franck to steer the plane for as long as it took. The plane had recovered some altitude, climbing from 6,500 feet to 8,000.
Harrison told Franck to calm down, to pull himself together. We are going to be okay, he told him.
“So just get that in your head,” Harrison commanded. “Im going to need you to help me. Can you do that?”
“Yeah,” Franck responded. “I think I can.”
Allen was not a particularly big man, but he was, unconscious, at least 160 pounds of dead weight. Harrison managed to get Allen out of the pilots seat and laid him on the floor of the plane behind the cockpit. The front of Allens shirt had ripped open, and Harrison was startled by what he saw: a black and blue blot the size of a softball on Allens chest. He wasnt sure what to make of it, but it scared the hell out of him.
“I thought his heart might have exploded,” Harrison said.
Once in the pilots seat, not much seemed to go right,. Harrison didnt know what button to push to talk into the headset. Franck showed him, but the headset still didnt work. In moving Allen, the pilots headset had been torn from the outlet, shredding the plug. Two of the three digital dashboard screens had gone black.
![](https://i0.wp.com/sundaylongread.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image2.jpeg?resize=1024%2C768&ssl=1)
The digital dashboard of the Cessna Caravan.
Harrison had managed to put on another headset, but Franck had to move the mouthpiece into place from the top of Harrisons head.
At one point, Harrison reached over and gently pulled Francks hands from the right hand yoke. The two men, in trying to pull the plane out of the dive, were fighting each other.
Harrison dismissed any notion of trying to fly back to Marsh Harbor. On the longshot chance Allens life could be saved, Harrison guessed, he stood a better chance at a Florida hospital.
Florida, of course, was to the west. But which way was that? Not that he knew it, but the plane had come out of its dive flying south, away from Ft. Pierce.
Harrisons racing mind lit up with a memory. Harrison had always been struck by the fact that even in the 21st Century—with all its advanced planes and sophisticated equipment—you could always find a basic compass on an airplane. Hed even see them in the cabins of commercial airlines.
“I always laughed,” he said, “with all the electronics that are on that thing, why do you have a compass?”
Harrison looked around the cockpit, and there it was amid all the other gauges and meters and gadgets in the front of the plane. He turned the plane right, and flew west.
It was 12:01 p.m., three minutes since Allen had gone unconscious.
Trying to reach the Florida coast, Harrison flew for 12 minutes. Even with working headsets, Harrison and Franck struggled to figure out channels or frequencies to talk on. At last Harrison managed to connect with controllers at Fort Pierce.
He gave them the basics: the pilot was out; he didnt know how to fly. Harrison was soon turned over to controllers at Palm Beach International.
The plane had climbed as high as 9,500 feet, nearly the altitude it had been at prior to the harrowing dive, and reached 187 knots, very close to the maximum safe speed.
At 12:12, now flying at 7,500 feet, the plane was 15 miles from the coast when Franck was able to make out the coastline. Harrison did, too.
“I could see it plain as day,” Harrison said. “It was a clear day, thank God.”
 The relief was brief.
“It sank in,” Harrison said. “At some point, youre going to have to land this fucking thing.”
No passenger has ever landed a commercial airliner in cases where the pilot or flight crew have become ill or incapable of flying. In 2005, a flight attendant who had been a student pilot tried to land a Helios Airways 737 after the entire flight crew had become incapacitated. The plane ran out of fuel and all 121 aboard died when it crashed in Greece.
With smaller planes, there have been a handful of episodes that did not turn tragic. Max Sylvester, a flight student in Australia, landed a two-seat Cessna during his very first lesson after the pilot instructor next to him fell ill. Sylvester first called his girlfriend, then had to hold the pilots head up so he would not choke on the blood suddenly coming from his mouth, and after four practice tries, he landed the plane safely.
“I hope they dont think Im paying for this class,” he joked with the air traffic controller.
Six years earlier, in 2013, John Wildey, 65, was the passenger in a two-seat plane that took off in Northeast, England. The pilot, a close friend, said he didnt feel well.
“His head fell back like he was looking at the ceiling,” Wildey recalled at the time. “His eyes were open, he had no pulse, and he was a bit clammy on the face when I tried to touch him. I recognized straight away that he was dead.”
Wildey put the plane down successfully as night fell after a helicopter had been put in the air to help guide him.
“Afterwards I bought a log book and put an hour and ten minutes in it,” he wrote in a first-person account. “I did my first solo, first formation flying, and first night landing all on my first trip. Not a bad start.”
Patrick Smith, the respected aviation expert and author who has run the AskThePilot website for years, said there is of course no real formula for survival in such moments, but three things help make success possible:
A passenger with an instinctive knack for keeping the plane level, for not making the understandable, even irresistible mistake of over controlling; good weather; and somebody who can talk you down.
Oh, Smith added, theres a fourth.
“Luck.”

## **“You have to be fast”**
There were 16 people in the house in Delray Beach, Fla., where Nishant Patel was raised. His Indian family—his father, his fathers three brothers and the mens four wives—had moved there from England. The brothers had lost their father when they were young, and with him went any aspirations for higher education or advanced degrees.
If they were going to make it, the brothers would stick together. They would be self-starters, entrepreneurs in their minds. Mom and pop convenience stores would be the gateway businesses, and South Florida seemed like a dream place to make a go of it.
“Just grunt work. Work hard to get where you want to go,” Patel said of his family.
The 16 folks under one roof included a grandmother and seven kids.
“It was chaotic. You didnt have much privacy,” Patel said. “But there was always someone around if you needed help. I felt like I had four sets of parents.”
Patel, the oldest of the seven children, pushed hard to lead the way. No one in the immigrant amalgam in Delray Beach had graduated from college.
“I like pressure,” Patel said.
And he thrived under it. He studied hard, went to Johns Hopkins, got a degree in the history of science, technology and medicine. He went on to five years of medical school at Hopkins, and emerged ready for a career as a thoracic surgeon.
Speed and precision, calm and confidence, organization and teamwork—he loved all of what heart surgery required.
“I mean, you have to be fast,” he said, “because the length of the operation is directly tied to the outcome of the patient.”
Patels first case without another surgeon across the operating table from him went well, although the night before had not. He didnt sleep a second.
“Rehearsing the steps, writing them down exactly—what Im going to say, exactly what Im going to do, how Im going to ask for things,” he recalled.
Years later, now with three kids of his own, Patel opted to return from Baltimore to the sprawling family brood in South Florida, taking a staff position at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.
He was there shortly after noon on May 10, 2022, finishing up a case.
The procedure was a success. But he hadnt slept much that night before either. Its an exhilarating and grueling specialty.
“I always tell patients theres only two surgeons that dont have complications,” Patel said. “Those that dont operate, and those who lie.”

## **“Idiots flying a plane”**
Bobby Morgan got the intercom page towards the end of his break in the courtyard at Palm Beach International.
“Bobby, come to the radar room immediately.”
Morgan, shoes off, book in hand, first thought it was a prank. The staff was capable of harmless goofing off to manage the days stress, although it mostly happened on weekends when there were fewer supervisors. And so he put his shoes on, and was walking through the break room inside when he passed a colleague.
“I wouldnt go in there if I were you,” he was told.
Morgan went in. The radar room is roughly 300 square feet. There are nine radar scopes, five on one wall, four on the other. Its kept dark, though not quite as dark as a movie theater. Cant be bumping into things. Theres a supervisors desk in the center.
“Heres the situation,” the supervisor on duty began. “Theres two passengers on board. The pilots incapacitated, and they cant wake him up. Hes unresponsive and the passengers are flying the plane.”
Morgan quickly asked what kind of plane it was. The supervisor told him, and said so far the passengers had been doing okay. But since Morgan was also a pilot and flight instructor, the supervisor said, he was the best candidate to rescue them.
“Wed like you to try to help him land the plane somewhere,” the supervisor said.
Morgans first reaction was reluctance.
“Why does it have to be me?” he asked himself.
There were no better options. And not a ton of luck. The only reliable way to communicate with the plane was with an emergency radio—an old-school, hand-held, walkie talkie type device attached to a wall above the radar scopes. The radio, a Motorola Pet2000,had a nickname—“the mercy radio.”
Morgan got through to Harrison. The supervisor was thrilled. Morgan was flummoxed.
“Well, I dont know what to say,” he told the supervisor.
Morgan made it up as he went.he first thing he relayed to Harrison was that they would try to get him to the nearest airport. It was a small facility in Boca Raton, right on the water. But Morgan had no idea if Harrison was at all familiar with Florida.
Morgan did know it was important to keep talking, to be a presence even if it was telling Harrison simple things he might have already figured out. The situation was hairy enough; loneliness would be no help. Morgan fought to limit the use of jargon, ingrained in him as it was.
He told Harrison the Boca Raton airport, seven miles off, would be seen at 11 oclock on a clockface. The approaching landscape was full of peril: I-95, the Florida Turnpike, dense residential communities, the swamps of the Everglades. All would be miserable places to crash.
“I dont have any instruments,” Harrison told Morgan. “Can you help me turn them back on?”
Morgan was struck by Harrisons calm. He didnt seem intimidated by trying to make sense of, and maybe use of, the flying tools in the plane. The problem was Morgan had never flown in a Cessna Caravan. He had maybe an hour and a half of flying in a vaguely similar plane. He certainly had no idea how the instruments and displays and controls were arrayed in the cockpit.
There were people standing around Morgan in the center. One of the managers sent someone to Google an image of the Caravans cockpit and control panels. It was printed out and brought to Morgan.

Terminal C at Palm Beach International Airport. (Photo by [formulanone](https://www.flickr.com/photos/formulanone/) via Flickr.)
Ingenious perhaps. But it was an older model of the plane. An order went out to get back on Google, and eventually a printout of the right model was given to Morgan. He kept both images in front of him—the older printout was clearer, if slightly inaccurate
Morgans sudden command of what Harrison was seeing—where the throttle was and how to use it; what information was on the lone working screen—meant the world.
“It was comforting to have him there to say, Hey, down here, theres a red handle, do this, do that,’” Harrison said. “He was spot on.”
Franck, meanwhile, was concerned for his dear, maybe dead friend. He could reach one of Allens feet—Allen liked to fly barefoot—from where he sat. He occasionally shook it for a sign of life. There was none.
Any calm Morgan felt with the right printout in front of him and his pep talks with Harrison going well was upended by his realization that trying to land at the Boca Raton airport was not going to work. It was May, still a busy season for vacationers and snowbirds in South Florida. There was only one runway, one taxiway, and the control tower sat in the middle of it all. No room for error.
“Hey, change of plans,” Morgan told Harrison.
They would land at Palm Beach International, where Morgan was. Huge runaways; better emergency equipment.
“Good idea,” Harrison managed.
At 12:22, the plane, flying at 5,200 feet, crossed the coastline.
Morgan would have to get Harrison turned north. Flying straight and level was one thing. Managing a turn as a first-time pilot was another.
“Turning is something that can get the plane out of control,” Morgan said. “If you turn too much and you dont correct, the plane will keep turning and itll kind of start a dive if you dont pull back on the controls. So I just said, I want you to start a slow turn to the right. Keep the coast on your right. Youll see the interstate. Follow the roads.’”
Now headed north, Morgan coached Harrison down to 4,000 feet, and told him to look at the horizon. He should be able to see the runway at Palm Beach International. Morgan said: Its 10,000 feet long, almost two miles.
“Its the biggest runway on the coast of Florida,” Morgan said. “Theres no way you can miss it.”
“Yeah, I think I see it,” Harrison said.
Franck saw it with wonder.
“It looks beautiful from where we are,” he remembers thinking.
The Cessna Caravan was a sturdy plane. It was designed and built to handle landing on rough runways in places like the Bahamas. In theory, landing on a giant runway at a world class airport would not be a problem.
Morgan, though, was worried about some TV antenna towers that Harrison might hit if he descended too quickly. He had Harrison maintain his altitude and fly by the airport on a first pass. He then directed him to do a 270 degree turn and land on a second pass.
Of course, Morgan did not need to tell Harrison controlling the planes speed during the final descent and landing would be critical. A planes flaps, when deployed, can help with that. Morgan used the printout to direct Harrison on how to engage the flaps.
Morgan tried to tell Harrison what to expect.
“When you put flaps down, it changes the shape of the wing so the plane will want to balloon up,” Morgan said. “I told him, As you put these flaps down, youre gonna have to put a lot of pressure on the controls forward because the planes going to want to climb.’”
Climb too suddenly and the plane could stall. Lawn dart.
Harrison put the flaps down, and was spooked. To him, working hard to push the planes nose down risked starting a dive.
“Ive already done that route today,” Harrison thought.  “I was like, Bobby, I dont like it, man. Its doing something squirrely. I dont know if somethings broke on the airplane. I dont know whats going on.’”
He tried it once more; same mortifying result.
“Is it possible to land this thing without flaps?” Harrison asked.
It was, Morgan said, but there would be worry about coming in too fast.
“All right, no flaps,” Harrison declared. “I aint doing that shit again.”
The plane was over I-95, and Franck was glad those in their cars did not know what was going on.
“Youre looking down and youre thinking, these people dont know what the hell is going on up here—you know, idiots flying a plane,” Franck said. “Not only could we take ourselves out, we could take out other people.”

## **“How do I stop this thing?”**
Harrison, barefoot and in shorts , was carrying baggage his improvised flying partner Franck could not have known about. His wife Brittnys sister Summer had lost her husband to a heart attack when she was six months pregnant with their child. Thats exactly how far along Brittny was in her pregnancy. Darren and Brittny had seen first hand the lasting hurt and damage of such a loss.
“If I die, shell be just like Summer,” Harrison said of his wife.
Those in the control tower at Palm Beach worked to limit the chances of Harrison dying. They halted takeoffs and arrivals and cleared the runways for Harrison and the Caravan. Emergency teams were put in place on the tarmac.
The Caravan was now at 2,000 feet, its speed 136 knots.
Harrison could see a tall building in the distance. His familys window and flooring company had done work for the real estate outfit that owned it. Harrison aimed for the building, and felt if he got down to it but still above it safely, hed have a good chance of landing.
“As long as I dont clip it, but be right above it,” he said to himself, “I should be able to be lined up perfectly to come in.”
It was 12:33. Harrison and Franck had stayed alive for 35 minutes since Allen had complained his head hurt. The plane was down to 1,650 feet, but its speed was back up to 143 knots.
“Hes got a big runway and plenty of runway as long as he doesnt miss it,” Morgan said. “As long as he is not too fast. Because the faster you are, the plane will just float and it doesnt wanna land. It just wants to keep flying.”
Harrisons final approach was unfolding as planned, but his speed was an issue.
“Youre doing everything perfect. I just need you to slow down,” Morgan told him. “I need you to take some throttle out of it.”
Harrison told Franck to pull the throttle back.“
If we fall out of the sky at this point, it doesnt matter,” Harrison thought to himself,. Were not that high. Might blow the gear off, but well be fine.
Franck did as he was told.
The plane was at 740 feet, 130 knots.
Morgan told Harrison that once he reached a certain altitude, the plane would disappear from his radar screen. Morgan would still be able to talk to Harrison, but he would not see what was happening with the plane.
“As you get in real close, the runways gonna get wider,” Morgan said.
Then, the plane was off the radar. Ten, maybe 15 seconds passed. It was 12:35, and the plane was going 115 knots.
“Im on the runway,” Harrison announced. “How do I stop this thing?”
Thrilled, Morgan told Harrison to run his bare feet up to the very top of the rudder pedals. Then just push down on them, he said. Simple enough, given all he had done. The plane came to a halt.
There was joy in the radar room; the pilots in planes on the tarmac expressed amazement; and then there was laughter.
“Do you want me to park this thing?” Harrison asked.
Just turn off the engine, he was told. Harrison had once owned an airboat, one that used an airplane engine. He figured out how to kill the engine on his own.
“When the motor stopped is when I finally lost it,” Harrison said. “It was pretty intense.”
Franck noticed Harrisons demeanor change.
“I looked over and his hands were shaking. That was the first time that I could see that he was human,” Franck said. “Otherwise he was like this robot, this machine.”
The machine said a long, stream-of-consciousness prayer.
“Im telling you,” Franck said, “it just, it just flowed nonstop.”
Harrison thought about calling his wife, but held off. The last part of his prayer had been for Ken Allen. Allen had started to come to, but he was fighting the emergency personnels effort to get him out of the plane. He thought the plane was still in the air, and that someone was trying to throw him out of it.
The EMS folks got Allen into a vehicle, went 300 yards and placed him in another ambulance to get to St. Marys Medical Center, the closest hospital to the airport.
“I could tell he was still alive,” Franck said of Allen as he was put in the second ambulance. “Hes moving, but hes not saying anything.”

## **“I was very honest about our chances”**
Nishant Patel never fully made it out of his surgical scrubs from that mornings procedure when he got the call around 1 p.m. Ken Allen had been seen at St. Marys, taken into the emergency room to be treated for what everyone suspected was a stroke.
“The good news is you didnt have a stroke,” one of the doctors told Allen. But there was some not great news, too.
Allen was found to have what is called an aortic dissection—not a complete rupture of the aorta, but a tearing of its layers. Its a condition whose outcome is directly connected to the speed with which it is diagnosed, and how quickly surgery is performed. The condition had a 98 percent mortality rate if untreated for a week. It was unclear how long the tear in Allens aorta had been present.
St. Marys, anyway, was not the place for the required surgery, and while it would inject a delay into the situation, St. Marys doctors wanted to send Allen six miles away to Palm Beach Gardens. They had Patels phone number.
On a day of options good and bad, Patel was the best, and he just so happened to be on duty, if a little tired from his earlier surgery.
“Lights and sirens,” Patel told St. Marys, meaning Allen needed to be rushed to him. “A helicopter if available.”
Allen went by ambulance, and Patel saw him in the emergency room at Palm Beach Gardens. He was alarmed to discover Allen had whats called a mal perfusion. Patel said it helps to imagine the aorta as a pipe with branches coming off it—to the kidneys, the liver, and the brain. The branch to Allens brain was compromised.
Allen had been able to speak to his wife via Facetime while at St. Marys. He told her he loved her, and was headed to serious surgery with a 50-50 chance of survival. She got on the phone to his friends in Lake Wales. One of them would fly her to Palm Beach.
Franck had been able to join Allen and Patel at Palm Beach Gardens.
“He looked like hed seen a ghost,” Patel said of Franck.
Franck did manage to tell Allen some of the details of the rare feat he and Harrison had pulled off.
“Im proud of you,” Allen whispered.
Franck teared up.
“You know, what we did was incredible,” he told Patel. “But it wont be a good day unless you save his life.”
Allen, fighting a powerful sleepiness, wasnt full of confidence.
“I knew I was probably going to die,” Allen said. “But honest to God, I was not scared. I wasnt weeping or crying.”
Survival, Patel knew, was only part of it. He wondered how badly Allens brain had been injured. Was it still being injured as he was prepped for surgery?
“Are we gonna get recovery of neurological function, or is Ken gonna have this devastating neurological injury for the rest of his life?” Patel said.
By the time Allen was in the operating room, it had been three hours since he landed. Patel had ordered his team to suit up again. Patels own daughter had undergone serious heart surgery, and the experience made him commit to communicating with patients with both candor and great care.
“I was very honest about our chances of getting him through, but then reassured him that he was at the right place to get it done,” Patel said.
Patel likes to operate in a room kept as cold as possible. The thermostat, he said, wouldnt allow him to go below 50 degrees. As for Allen, he was about to get cold, too.
Patel and his team initiated whats called hypothermic circulatory arrest. Allens head was packed in ice; a heart-lung machine, used so that the heart can be operated on, pumped cold blood throughout the body. Allens body temperature would be reduced to 18 degrees celsius.
The procedure took nine hours, though the most critical work of replacing the damaged segment of the aorta with a polyester fabric, had to be completed in one 60-minute stretch.
“Youre just chopping that piece of pipe out,” Patel said, “and putting in a new piece of piping.”
Once done, Allens body temperature would be returned to normal. He was sewn up.
Allen would spend six days in the intensive care unit. But hed wake up, be able to move his limbs. Neurological damage, if any, was minimal.
Upon discharge, Patel gave Allen a final briefing. No restrictions in your life going forward. Do anything you want.
“Youll know what you can do as you heal up,” he said. “You know, if you want to have a bourbon, go drink a bourbon.”
Even fly a plane.

## **Epilogue**
More than two years later, Ken Allen still doesnt believe what happened, what the two men in the plane and a third in an operating room gown pulled off.
“I dont understand it,” he said of the entire episode. “We all three should be dead, right? I mean, honest to God, we all three should be dead.”
Amazed and haunted, hes pored over the flight data, mapped the route, and listened to what little communications were recorded. The data dont lie. Darren and Russ did it.
In order to continue flying, the Federal Aviation Administration made Allen take multiple physical, neurological and cognitive functional tests. His effort to regain his clearance to fly would take 17 months involve being seen by six doctors.
Hes back to flying all the time now, including the very same Cessna Caravan.
And he has had a few bourbons.

In the days after Allens surgery, Nishant Patel did a news conference relating some of what happened. He even got to enjoy a quirky moment of celebrity after he operated on Allen, something hed never recounted publicly.
A man had been diagnosed with an aortic dissection, and was set to be treated at a hospital about 10 miles from Palm Beach Gardens. The mans wife wasnt comfortable.
“Where is the pilot doctor? Is he here?” she asked the staff. Told he wasnt, the man and his wife asked to be transferred to Palm Beach Gardens, where Patel was in surgery.
“I finished up my bypass surgery, ended up doing his operation,” Patel said of the man. “He did fine.”
Franck, for his part, said he got asked so often about the flight by family and friends that he chose to write up an account for the members of his church in Lake Wales.
“People ask me if we panicked and my answer is we didnt have time,” he wrote. He then added, “Now comes the God part.”
Franck wrote that both he and Harrison had felt a presence in the cockpit, a force keeping their heads clear. He wrote that the feeling for him was so powerful that he felt in direct contact with his God.
Franck then added a line about Harrison, one he wrote with gratitude and something like grace.
“I am convinced that God has plans for that boy.”
Harrison, it turns out, had always had plans to try and check out an airport control tower. After Ken Allen was off to the hospital, he got his chance. Airport personnel arranged for Harrison to get access to the tower, and once inside, he made it to the top, where there were computer screens and windows.
“Pretty amazing what you just did,” one of the men in the tower said.
“Man, I was just trying to stay alive,” Harrison said back to him.
“No, I dont think you realize what you just did,” the worker insisted. And then he pointed at the top right corner of one of the computer screens. There, the number 27 shone.
“The runway that you landed on, there was a 27 mile an hour crosswind when you landed,” he said. “Doing that is unheard of in that airplane.”
Harrison also got to meet Bobby Morgan. It was quite a moment. They took pictures. Morgan wanted to ask a million questions of Harrison.
“But I didnt,” he said. “I knew what he had been through.”
Morgan was given the rest of the afternoon off. The next day, he did what he loved to do he went flying.
Harrisons friends rallied to get him home quickly. Brittny, his wife, had dropped her phone in shock when Harrison had told her what had happened. The friends could get a plane to him, he was told.
“Dudes,” he told them, “Im just going to rent a car.”
There were some local news accounts about the passenger landing a plane, though Harrison said he had no interest in talking with reporters. He did do a spot with his wife Brittny on the Today Show.
And then he went back to his job with Sunshine Interiors in Lakeland. Brittny gave birth to a healthy girl, Mary Margaret. Harrisons pals joked he was some kind of guardian angel. Some online trolls alleged he must have had some experience as a pilot.
In a world of conspiracy theories, its a doozy: that Harrison, with his life, and the lives of two others, on the line, would fake his lack of knowledge to make it all a better story should they survive. To Harrison, its a nutty annoyance.
“I dont care,” he said. “Fuck them. Im the one that sat in that seat.”
In that spirit, Harrison got himself a new head cover for his golf clubs: “Not Today” they read.

# 'Pulp Fiction' Turns 30: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson Look Back
Celebrating its 30th anniversary on Oct. 14, “[Pulp Fiction](https://variety.com/t/pulp-fiction/)” has left a massive footprint on moviemaking.
Originally conceived as an anthology by writer-director [Quentin Tarantino](https://variety.com/t/quentin-tarantino/) and his longtime friend, collaborator and Video Archives coworker Roger Avary, the film evolved into a funny, violent, endlessly inventive, non-linear odyssey. In addition to reviving the career of [John Travolta](https://variety.com/t/john-travolta/), minting a star in [Samuel L. Jackson](https://variety.com/t/samuel-l-jackson/) and spawning a still-thriving cottage industry of knockoffs and imitation films, “Pulp” earned the 1994 Cannes Film Festival Palme dOr, seven Academy Award nominations and one win (for Tarantino and Avarys screenplay), while its commercial success ($213 million off of an $8.5 million budget) forever changed the economics of independent cinema.
[To commemorate the legacy and impact of “Pulp Fiction,”](https://variety.com/2024/film/festivals/pulp-fiction-reunion-john-travolta-quentin-tarantino-samuel-l-jackson-uma-thurman-1235976210/) *Variety* spoke with more than 20 members of the films cast and crew to solicit their experiences and recollections. Armed with more than 100 pages of interviews, weve elected to break down this retrospective into two sections. This article covers the films conception and its release, and another will delve into [the nuts and bolts of the production itself](https://variety.com/2024/film/features/pulp-fiction-inside-story-30th-anniversary-20-cast-crew-tarantinoverse-1236176951/).
### Popular on Variety
*The origins of “Pulp Fiction” began in the late 1980s while Tarantino and Avary were working together at southern California video store mainstay Video Archives.*
**Roger Avary, cowriter, story:** The original idea for “Pulp Fiction” was, were going to make three short films with three different filmmakers. Im going to make one, Quentins going to make one and we had a pal, Adam Rifkin, who was going to make one. I wrote a script called “Pandemonium Reigns,” and along the way, my little short film expanded into a feature-length script. “Reservoir Dogs” expanded into a feature-length script. Adam just never wrote his, and “Pulp Fiction” for a while was something that wasnt going to happen.
**Danny DeVito, executive producer:** Stacey Sher knew Quentin, and she set up a meeting for us. After about six minutes of talking with Quentin, I said, “I want to make a deal right now.” There was a little Quentin pause, and he said yes. And I made a deal with him. I hadnt seen “Reservoir Dogs” yet because it was still being made.
**Avary:** And then Quentin does “Reservoir Dogs” and hes getting all sorts of offers to do really cool studio projects. But he basically came back and called me one day and said, “I keep thinking about Pulp Fiction, and I think I want to make it as one movie and direct it all myself.” So we took my script \[to “Pandemonium Reigns”\] and we collapsed it back down, and then we went to Amsterdam and we took all the scenes that wed ever written that hadnt been already put into movies. And out came eventually “Pulp Fiction.”

**Lawrence Bender, producer:** After “Reservoir Dogs,” I flew to Amsterdam to meet him there, and he had this little Walkman and he was listening to Dick Dale and “Misirlou,” and he was listening to all this surf music as hes writing “Pulp Fiction.” Of course, “Misirlou” ends up in the credit sequence.
**DeVito:** I spoke to him during that year, checking in, just “Hows everything? Is it coming along?” And then, there was a doorbell ring, and there was a package, a manila envelope with 155 pages in it. I swear to God, I always like to think it was still warm. And the top page read, “Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino, final draft.” I tucked myself into a sofa with a cup of tea and I laughed my ass off. I loved it from the very beginning to the very end. The big question was that it was 155 pages. I had this woman I worked with, Wilma, who was my script supervisor, and she used to time things for me. You usually go a page a minute, and the final running time of the movie was 154 minutes.
**Michael Shamberg, executive producer:** Only Harvey \[Weinstein\] bid on it. Harvey thought he was in a bidding war, but he wasnt. To this day, if I see Bob Shaye, hell tell me that he wished hed never turned down “Pulp Fiction.” Quentin wanted to do it with Mike Medavoy because Mike had done all the great Orion films, but ironically, when it came along, Mike thought it was too violent.
**Bender:** We wanted the budget to be between $6 and $8 million, because that way we could maintain more control over the movie itself because it was a low enough budget. And when we made the movie, believe it or not, the budget of that movie literally was $8.5 million with contingency. And when it was all over, we returned $500,000 and it was exactly $8 million.

John Travolta as Vincent Vega ©Miramax/Courtesy Everett Collection
*As part of his own development deal at TriStar Pictures, DeVito was given final cut on all of his projects. He passed that along to Tarantino and the other directors he worked with at Jersey Films.*
**DeVito:** I went to Harvey \[Weinstein\], and he says to me, “Yeah, well do this with Daniel Day-Lewis, who just won an Academy Award for My Left Foot.” I said, “The director wants John Travolta. I told this kid Ive got final cut, plus cast approval.” I think he called me every name in the book, but of course, Quentin got what he wanted, and he was absolutely right, and the rest is history.
**John Travolta (“Vincent Vega”):** The last success \[Id experienced\] before “Pulp Fiction” was the “Look Whos Talking” films, so getting the “Pulp” offer was certainly a next-level, upper echelon opportunity more along the lines of the Oscar nomination-type performance of “Saturday Night Fever” and “Blow Out” integrity. I was one of his favorite actors growing up on “Welcome Back Kotter,” “Saturday Night Fever,” “Grease” and “Blow Out,” and he wanted to work with me. I think it helped his being a big Pauline Kael fan, and my being one of her favorite actors, so he raised the bar for me and gave me a second chance at a high-end career, one that he always wanted me to have.
**Bender:** When Sam came in, he was great. But then someone else came in and blew us away, and I had to call Sams agent and said, “we might have to go with that other person.” And she said, “No, no, no, you cant do that. Sam will come back.” I didnt want to make Sam come in and audition again. But it turned out that Sam thought he was just coming in to read. He didnt think he was actually auditioning. So he came back in and just blew the doors off.
**Bender:** Harvey Keitel was the linchpin getting “Reservoir Dogs” made. And on “Pulp Fiction,” he knew Bruce Willis. So we went up to see him at his house in Malibu. \[Bruce\] could recite basically the entire movie of “Reservoir Dogs.” He loved that movie. It was a “you had me at hello” kind of thing. And he and Quentin took a walk on the beach, and they came back and Bruce was doing the movie.

Amanda Plummer as Honey Bunny and Tim Roth as Pumpkin © Miramax/courtesy Everett Collection
**Tim Roth (“Pumpkin”):** The character that he was writing for me was what Bruce Willis ended up playing. But there was a fun thing that happened that I think brought about the Pumpkin and Honey Bunny situation, which was I got to know Amanda Plummer a little bit. And she had the premiere of “The Fisher King” coming up, and I suggested that I would be her date. We went to the premiere, and there was Terry Gilliam and Quentin. I got to talking with Quentin and I remember saying to him, “I want to be in a film with Amanda, but she has to have a gun in her hand because the idea of Amanda Plummer having a gun in her head is truly terrifying.” And sure enough, he wrote it.
*Avary characterized their collaborations in those years as one in which “everybody was doing everything.” Though his work on “Pandemonium Reigns” had provided a loose structure for the films “The Gold Watch” sequence, Avary says there were no conflicts over how credit was assigned on the final script.*
**Avary:** Quentin told me what he wanted to do, and we did it. Neither of us were in the Writers Guild at that time.
**Karyn Rachtman, music supervisor:** I got more credit for working on those movies then I deserve, to an extent. But the hardest thing about Quentin was I remember going to his apartment because he knew everything he wanted, but he spelled everything wrong. So my job was, “Let me please come over and go through your record collection and get the proper spelling, because there is no song called this.” And I remember going through and him showing me the Urge Overkill on vinyl. He knew what he wanted.
**Bender:** The first major screening of the movie was at the New York Film Festival. Its a massive theater and were in the box seats, and right when Uma gets stabbed with a needle, you see some rustling down below. Someone screams, “Is there a doctor in the house?” I jump out of my seat and run downstairs, and the manager of the theater runs up to me, “What do I do?” I say, “Turn the lights on.” So the movie shuts down, and the lights come on. And the guy, he had a sugar shock or something, and that scene shocked him into this kind of thing where he fainted. So me and Harvey Weinstein walk over, a couple of people help him up and they give him some orange juice. Harvey gives him his limousine and he takes him home so he can be fine, and everythings fine. But now, the biggest fear Harvey and Bob had at the time was that people were going to see this movie as too violent, and they wanted to promote this movie and make it be a big hit. So now in the upstairs lobby, theyre pacing back and forth, “What do we do? If this gets out that this guy went into shock because of the violence in the movie, thats going to be the only thing that people hear about.” Theyre freaking out. But the story did not get out, and the reviews were great. And that was the beginning of a successful launch of the movie.

Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace and Ving Rhames as Marsellus Wallace © Miramax Films/ Courtesy: Everett Collection
*For the cast and production team, seeing the final film for the first time was almost as memorable as reading Tarantinos script.*
**Ving Rhames (“Marsellus Wallace”):** It was at the premiere. I thought it was a hell of a movie.
**Travolta:** It was at the Cannes Film Festival. It exceeded my expectations because it arrived at a new level of storytelling and filmmaking and you could feel it — it was visceral. It was history in the making.
**Julia Sweeney Blum (“Raquel”):** This is now a source of friction between me and Quentin. Because we went to Edinburgh and they did a midnight secret screening of “Pulp Fiction” before Cannes, and thats when I saw it. And that was the last time I saw it until I saw it at the \[30th anniversary screening at the TCM Film Festival in April 2024\]. And when I said that, Quentin got very upset that I had not seen it in between. And I said, “Okay, heres my defense. One is, it is true that Steve Hibbert, my ex-husband, is in it.” Honestly, I didnt care that he played The Gimp, but the big thing is I cant stand to look at myself. Ive learned to get over it, but its not something I willingly do. That was my reason to Quentin, and he accepted that.
**Shamberg:** At Cannes, I remember a standing ovation that went on forever, and my wife turned to me and said, “This movies great. Its going to get Oscar nominations.”
**Frank Whaley (“Brett”):** When the film was released, I was out of the country working. And I got several calls from people saying its the greatest movie theyd ever seen. And when I got back home, I was living in New York City, and it was a week or two after the film had been released. I still hadnt seen it. But I was being recognized on the subway, and that had never happened. Id been working for a good five, six years in films, big films, and I never got recognized.
**Kathy Griffin (“Kathy Griffin”):** When I finally saw the movie, it was beyond expectations. Because on the page, I was like, fuck, this is gory. And there was the N-word, and then he said the N-word. And like any white person, Im looking around at the Black people here, going, “what are they doing?” So a lot of it was shocking for its time. And yet when I saw the execution just as a fan, scene after scene after scene, I was like, “he fucking did it.” I marveled at the performances, large and small. I want you to know that my three lines are the reason it won the Palme dOr.
![](https://variety.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/MSDPUFI_EC075.jpg?w=672)
Rosanna Arquette as Jody ©Miramax/Courtesy Everett Collection
**Rosanna Arquette (“Jody”):** I was pregnant when it came out, and I remember going into it and it was so violent my mom and I had to leave. So Id never sat and watched it as a cinema experience until 30 years later at the Chinese Theatre. Its still this cultural phenomenon, but also I still have the issue of, enough with the N-word. For me, thats always been an issue, and I didnt realize how much it was an issue until I saw it this last time. Its still great filmmaking, but theres cringe-worthy moments, and its usually not just the violence. But I do love him as a filmmaker.
**Avary:** Everybody was telling me, “Youre going to win an Academy Award.” But I was like, “Stop saying that. Youre going to jinx it!” It made it more nerve wracking that they were saying that. And plus, we were up against really excellent movies. But when they called my name, I, in my mind, floated above my body and watched myself walk up as a detached entity. The very next day, I went from being an indie filmmaker whos been told no by everyone to all of a sudden, everyone wants to meet with you. And that can be a head trip. Im lucky that my wife immediately identified this psychology breakdown and had me take out the trash.
*For nearly every member of the cast and crew, being a part of cinematic history was humbling and life changing.*
**Rhames:** It was a film with a great director who I admire and felt great to be a part of.
**Travolta:** \[I hold it in\] one of the most special places, because it rekindled my career to a level that I always wanted it to be. It also matched an iconic status with “Saturday Night Fever,” which was very rare in movie history.

Samuel L Jackson, Harvey Keitel, Uma Thurman and John Travolta at the “Pulp Fiction” 30th Anniversary Screening at the 2024 TCM Classic Film Festival Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection
**DeVito:** I had no inkling that it was going to go on to be such a seminal, revered piece of work. I have seen the movie, I dont know how many times. No, I had no premonition that it was going to wind up being his masterpiece, which it is. You can watch it tomorrow and get the same feelings that you had 30 years ago.
**Shamberg:** I have one metric for films which is, if Im making a film — and you have to watch so many cuts of a film — will I get bored watching another cut? And I watch films in theaters or on screen and I go, “I couldnt have have sat through another screening of this film.” But you could never not enjoy watching “Pulp Fiction.”
**Avary:** “Pulp Fiction” made it possible for me to raise a family. Thats just a simple fact. The success of the film made it possible for me to enjoy life and to be able to focus on the work that I was developing. And to have gotten to know the actors that I got to know from the film, Bruce and Maria and John, I just love all three of them.
**Whaley:** Its definitely a career milestone for me to be involved in this film, just like everybody else whos in it. I mean, I can only speak for myself. But when the New York Times, God willing publishes my obituary, thatll be one of the things mentioned. Im still lucky enough to be working after 35 years and making a living, and I would definitely attribute my involvement in “Pulp Fiction” to that.
**Griffin:** Two things. Number one, its always just weird when people are like, “Is that you in Pulp Fiction?” Because its so unexpected. And number two, I love that he credited me as Kathy Griffin plays Herself. At the time, he knew very much that I wanted to be famous, and so as a favor, he put Kathy Griffin as Herself instead of Woman Number Two or whatever. And I thought that was really sweet and really cute.
**Christopher Walken (“Captain Koons”):** I remember I was in Malta working, and I was in this hotel and they had a steam room, and I went in and there were these guys in there, and I sat down and all of a sudden one of them starts to do my speech from “Pulp Fiction.” He had it memorized, and suddenly all the guys with him started laughing and I realized that they were doing that for me. It showed me the depth of audience for that movie. That was halfway around the world and there were all these guys quoting “Pulp Fiction.”
**Rachtman:** I remember the Dick Dale people really thanking me because it made them lots of money.
**Roth:** What comes to mind when I think of it is I think of Amanda, Mandy P. I also remember Sam passing a wallet across, the Bad Motherfucker wallet — which we all got at the end. I think I have mine around here somewhere. Bad Motherfucker wallets. Sams good with shit like that too. He comes up with the best gifts at the end of films. But yeah, Bad Motherfucker.

# For Jeff Bezos and his businesses, Washington has become more important
As president, [Donald Trump](https://www.washingtonpost.com/donald-trump/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2) spent years insulting and threatening Amazon, the e-commerce giant founded by Jeff Bezos. Amazon sometimes hit back, claiming once that the company had been unfairly blocked from a lucrative government contract simply because Trump was angry at Bezos over coverage in the newspaper he owns, The Washington Post.
But in August, weeks after Trump formally secured the GOP nomination, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who succeeded Bezos in 2021, sought to establish a friendlier rapport with the former president, introducing himself in a phone call and outlining the companys plans for the future.
The call concluded with Trump suggesting the company cut a large check for his presidential efforts, according to two people familiar with the conversation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to recount the private discussion. Trump told Jassy that he was going to win the election and that Amazon should help him because it would be in the companys best interests.
Jassy did not agree to make the contribution. But the call itself reflected signs of new engagement between Trump and key figures in the business empire overseen by Bezos, who remains executive chairman of Amazon. CNN first disclosed the existence of the call, but the request for a contribution has not been previously reported.
After Trumps ear was grazed by a bullet during an attempted assassination at a July campaign rally, Bezos called Trump to say how impressed he was that the candidate had raised his fist after coming under fire, according to a person familiar with that conversation. Last week, executives from Bezoss space company, Blue Origin, spoke briefly to Trump after a campaign stop in Texas. The encounter occurred on the same day that Post leadership [announced](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/10/25/washington-post-endorsement/?itid=lk_inline_manual_9) that the newspaper would not be issuing an endorsement in this years presidential race or in future ones.
A Blue Origin spokesman said the meeting with Trump was arranged spontaneously when CEO Dave Limp, who was in Austin to meet with Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas), learned that he would be departing from the same airport where the candidate was holding a rally. A Trump campaign spokeswoman said, “Business leaders across the country support President Trump because they know hes a businessman with a proven track record of economic success from his first term in the White House.”
Spokespeople for Bezos and Amazon did not respond to requests for comment.
In recent years, Bezoss interests in Washington have expanded, with the federal government now contracting billions not just to Amazons cloud-computing subsidiary but also to Blue Origin, which is locked in a fierce competition with SpaceX, the rocket company founded by Trump ally Elon Musk. Another Republican megadonor, Larry Ellison, is executive chairman of Oracle, the software company that jockeys with Amazon for major technology contracts.
Amazons cloud-computing division, Amazon Web Services, has grown rapidly since Trumps term ended. It generated more than half the companys total profits last quarter, with federal contracts forming a key element of that business. On defense technology alone, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle will compete for up to $8 billion over the next two years to modernize military servers, with the Pentagon expected to ink even more lucrative, long-term contracts under the next president to maintain those systems. Blue Origin is under a $3.4 billion NASA contract for a moon mission set to launch in 2029 and is now able to compete for the next round of national security launch contracts, worth a combined $5.6 billion.
The premium that Amazon places on its relationships in Washington is evident in the more than $15 million the e-commerce giant and its subsidiary, AWS, have spent on federal lobbying so far this year, disclosures show. Lobbying expenditures have risen steadily over the last decade.
For Blue Origin, which says its $10 billion in sales orders is now divided between commercial and government customers, the stakes may be even greater. The next president could face momentous decisions about whether the U.S. government will prioritize travel to the moon, where Bezoss company is especially focused, or to Mars, a longtime preoccupation of Musks. Blue Origin has spent about $2 million on lobbying so far this year, according to disclosures, less than the amount reported by SpaceX under that name and its formal title, Space Exploration Technologies.
“All the most important work at Blue was aimed at some point either in the short term or long term at winning government business,” said a former space industry executive who has worked with Bezos.
Bezos has faced backlash since The Post announced last week that its editorial board [would not](https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2024/10/25/washington-post-endorsement-president/?itid=lk_inline_manual_22) endorse a candidate in this presidential election or in future ones. Commentators and a deluge of readers who canceled their subscriptions said they saw Bezos as upending a decades-old tradition to protect business interests that could be vulnerable in a second Trump administration.
Bezos, who bought The Post in 2013, explained his decision in a [Post op-ed](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/10/28/jeff-bezos-washington-post-trust/?itid=lk_inline_manual_25) published Monday, arguing that presidential endorsements undermine credibility with readers at a time of declining trust in journalistic institutions. He acknowledged the complexities arising from his dual role as a newspaper owner and a founder of numerous companies with interests in Washington but maintained that he was not acting out of self-interest.
“You can see my wealth and business interests as a bulwark against intimidation, or you can see them as a web of conflicting interests,” he wrote. “Only my own principles can tip the balance from one to the other. I assure you that my views here are, in fact, principled, and I believe my track record as owner of The Post since 2013 backs this up.”
The Posts newsroom operates separately from its opinion section, and Martin Baron, a former executive editor who led the newspaper when Trump was in office, has said that Bezos never interfered with news coverage.
On the opinions side, Bezoss stance on endorsements signals a shift in approach from the two previous elections since he bought the news organization. In both elections, The Posts editorial page opposed Trump.
In his op-ed, Bezos said he “sighed” when he learned that Trump had met briefly with Blue Origin executives the day The Post announced it would no longer issue presidential endorsements, knowing it would “provide ammunition to those who would like to frame this as anything other than a principled decision.” He insisted he had not been aware of the meeting.
### Political exposure
Bezos, with an estimated net worth of more than $200 billion, got his start in business three decades ago when he founded Amazon as an online bookstore in his Seattle garage. Today, his wealth still derives in large part from the shares he owns in the company, which is valued at about $2 trillion.
Over the years, he has taken on additional ventures. He founded Blue Origin in 2000. He bought The Post 13 years later. In 2020, he committed $10 billion to fight climate change in a new project called the Bezos Earth Fund.
Unlike many of his wealthy peers, Bezos has largely steered clear of politics. He has not given major sums to candidates, with the exception of $10 million he and his then-wife, MacKenzie Scott, contributed in 2018 to a centrist super PAC that supports military veterans running for office. In 2022, Bezos [publicly sparred](https://x.com/JeffBezos/status/1525309091970699265?s=20&t=OwmBqgxRrsgbiZDeLkbrCQ) with the Biden administration over economic policy, ridiculing the presidents statement on social media that corporate taxes could be used to address inflation. A White House spokesperson [responded](https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2022/05/16/white-house-bezos-biden/?itid=lk_inline_manual_38) by suggesting that Bezos was irked that Biden had met in the White House with labor leaders behind Amazons unionization drive, which the company has sought to stamp out.
People who have interacted with Bezos describe him as a libertarian who is skeptical of taxes, welfare programs and labor unions. He has expressed strong disagreement, these people said, with certain left-wing politicians, such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts). He has been especially outspoken about immigration, telling Amazon employees in 2017 that the company would use its lobbying resources to oppose efforts by Trump to bar immigrants from seven majority-Muslim nations and, more recently, urging congressional action to protect undocumented young immigrants, known as “dreamers.”
After Trumps election in 2016, Bezos was thrust into the political spotlight as his businesses came under pressure from a president fixated on Post coverage.
“Arguably no non-media company and its chief executive were assailed by Trump more frequently or savagely than Amazon and Bezos,” Baron, the former Post executive editor, wrote in his 2023 book, “Collision of Power: Trump, Bezos, and The Washington Post.” Still, Baron wrote, Bezos always allowed The Post newsroom to “operate with full independence.”
The former president complained bitterly about Bezos to his advisers and sought to punish his companies out of anger about Post journalism, according to four former administration officials. Trump asked aides about clawing back any benefits that Amazon receives from the U.S. government. He [accused Amazon](https://x.com/realdonaldtrump/status/981168344924536832?lang=en) of swindling the U.S. Postal Service, going so far as to create a task force to examine the agencys finances that eventually concluded that deliveries for Amazon and other retailers were profitable for the Postal Service. He [wanted the government](https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/trump-instructs-federal-agencies-to-cancel-washington-post-and-new-york-times-subscriptions/2019/10/24/aefcf0b0-f68a-11e9-8cf0-4cc99f74d127_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_44) to cancel all subscriptions to The Post.
The repercussions for Bezoss cloud-computing business, Amazon Web Services, as well as for Blue Origin, played out both publicly and privately.
In 2018, when the Pentagon began a bidding process for a $10 billion cloud contract, Amazon Web Services was considered a favorite for the award, called the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, or JEDI contract.
In April 2019, Amazon and Microsoft were picked to continue competing for the Pentagon award. But that July, Trump [told reporters](https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/politics/trump-says-he-will-look-at-pentagon-jedi-contract/2019/07/18/782ebec5-3f7a-4923-aa24-8d96ece7b8b1_video.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_49) that he was “very seriously” examining what he described as concerns about favoritism toward Amazon, and in August, the Pentagon put the process on hold amid complaints from the president. Defense officials [denied](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/02/us/politics/amazon-pentagon-contract-trump.html) being influenced by the White House.
In October, the Pentagon [awarded the contract](https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/10/25/pentagon-awards-controversial-billion-cloud-computing-deal-microsoft-spurning-amazon/?itid=lk_inline_manual_50) to Microsoft, prompting a protest from Amazon, which filed a complaint in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. Amazon argued that the award process could not be separated from Trumps “repeatedly expressed determination to, in the words of the President himself, screw Amazon.’”
The [complaint](https://www.washingtonpost.com/context/amazon-s-redacted-complaint-over-jedi-award-to-microsoft/baf83e3a-06c2-420d-a627-e67f6a0ce50a/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12&itid=lk_inline_manual_51) cited Trump by name 181 times in arguing that he became increasingly “obsessed” with punishing Bezos. The “seeds of this animus originate with the Washington Posts coverage of him before he even was elected President,” the complaint read.
During Trumps last year in office, the Defense Department Inspector Generals office [reviewed the matter](https://media.defense.gov/2020/Apr/15/2002281438/-1/-1/1/REPORT%20ON%20THE%20JOINT%20ENTERPRISE%20DEFENSE%20INFRASTRUCTURE%20\(JEDI\)%20CLOUD%20PROCUREMENT%20DODIG-2020-079.PDF) and said the procurement process had been conducted consistent with applicable law. But the Pentagon watchdog also said it could not rule out White House interference because several potential Defense Department witnesses had been instructed by Pentagon lawyers not to answer questions about whether they had communicated with the White House about the contract.
Meanwhile, it was becoming clear to executives at Blue Origin that the billionaires ownership of The Post was also creating friction in their interactions with the Trump administration.
During a meeting in April 2019 between Blue Origin then-CEO Bob Smith and top administration officials to discuss the Pentagons space launch contracts, Marc Short, Vice President Mike Pences chief of staff, put the company on notice about its reputation inside the White House, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the matters sensitivity.
“You have a Washington Post problem,” Short said, according to the people. Short declined to comment.
Blue Origin executives interpreted his remark as a reaction to a [negative editorial](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/mike-pence-boldly-sending-america-back-to-where-man-has-gone-before/2019/03/28/9e0a007a-5169-11e9-88a1-ed346f0ec94f_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_56) in The Post, according to people familiar with their thinking. The Posts editorial board had panned remarks by Pence at a meeting of the National Space Council in Huntsville, Alabama, and questioned whether the administrations space ambitions amounted to anything more than political theater.
Senior leaders at Blue Origin viewed Trump as good for the space business, former employees said. He called for a return to the moon, reestablished the National Space Council and directed the Pentagon to create an additional branch of the armed forces focused on space — which became the United States Space Force, founded in 2019. But these same corporate leaders feared that they would pay the price for Trumps animosity toward Bezos, according to a person familiar with their thinking. One former space industry executive said Bezos was made aware of the concerns but was not intimately involved in responding to them.
Blue Origin leaders went into overdrive to demonstrate their separation from The Post. In January 2020, when the editorial board [again criticized](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/nasa-keeps-falling-victim-to-presidential-whims/2020/01/31/a85641e4-43ab-11ea-aa6a-083d01b3ed18_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_58) the administrations space policy, Blue Origin executives sought to publish an op-ed outlining the companys support for the administrations plans, according to two people familiar with the discussions. The editorial page editor, Fred Hiatt, who died in 2021, deemed the proposal too promotional for the company, according to people familiar with the discussions, so executives opted instead for a full-page advertisement, which ran on Feb. 18, 2020.
The advertisement responded directly to The Posts most recent editorial, saying the commentary reflected “uninformed critiques.” It was signed by Smith, the CEO, and emblazoned with the Blue Origin logo.
### Future ambitions
Bezos stepped down from the CEO position at Amazon in July 2021, handing the reins to Jassy and transitioning into the role of executive chairman.
Last year, he moved from Seattle, his home of nearly three decades, to Miami, where he and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, live on the same exclusive barrier island as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. The pair attended Bezoss 60th birthday party earlier this year, held at a Beverly Hills mansion owned by Bezos, according to news reports and images shared by guests on social media. Also in attendance were prominent celebrities, including Trump critics such as Oprah Winfrey.
The billionaire puts most of his focus now on Blue Origin, according to former space industry executives.
The rocket company is competing against industry leader SpaceX, whose founder, Musk, has poured about $120 million into efforts to elect Trump, according to campaign finance records, while publicly enthusing over a potential high-level role in his next administration, running what the billionaire libertarian has called “The Department of Government Efficiency.”
The rivalry between the two titans — and the two richest people in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index — is defining a new era of commercial space operations that could be influenced significantly by the next president.
Trumps election in 2016 happened to coincide with a shift at Blue Origin, said a former employee, away from Bezos being willing simply to invest his own money and toward him “expecting that the government is going to fund a lot of these things.” But in terms of securing government business, Musks company is far ahead. SpaceX was the first private company to send astronauts to the International Space Station and has pioneered satellite internet technology through its Starlink program. An Amazon project to deploy similar internet satellites, called Project Kuiper, trails far behind.
During a Saturday meeting at Blue Origins headquarters in May 2016, Bezos was frustrated that SpaceX had won a $33 million Pentagon contract for the development of its next-generation Raptor engine, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
“Elons real superpower is getting government money,” Bezos said, according to the people. “From now on, we go after everything that SpaceX bids on.”
In 2021, SpaceX beat out competitors including Blue Origin for a $2.9 billion contract to build a spacecraft capable of landing astronauts on the moon. Bezoss company unsuccessfully protested the contract with the Government Accountability Office and filed litigation claiming that the selection process had been flawed. Last year, Blue Origin separately secured a $3.4 billion contract to build a second lander for NASAs Artemis campaign. A Blue Origin spokesman said the company aims for a balance between government and commercial customers, with a larger share to date coming from commercial business.
Blue Origin wants to keep NASA focused on lunar exploration, according to two former employees of the Bezos rocket company, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid reprisal. For his part, Musk is bent on Mars — frequently sporting an “Occupy Mars” T-shirt — and is seen as someone who could use his influence with Trump to direct more federal resources toward exploration of that planet, the former employees said.
A recent guest on Bezoss yacht told associates there was “non-stop conversation about Elon” and his ambitions in space among Bezos and those in attendance, according to a person told about the conversations.
Back on land, Amazons contracts with the federal government remain a driver of one of its fastest growing and most profitable divisions, Amazon Web Services. The day after Bezos stepped down as Amazon CEO in July 2021, the Defense Department [announced](https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/release/article/2682992/future-of-the-joint-enterprise-defense-infrastructure-cloud-contract/) it was canceling the disputed JEDI contract to modernize the Defense Departments computing systems. The Pentagon said the militarys needs had changed since the contract was awarded to Microsoft during the Trump administration and that it would now engage with both Microsoft and Amazon on a new $9 billion package of cloud computing contracts to accomplish the work.
A year later, Amazon beat out Microsoft for a deal with the National Security Agency, reportedly worth $10 billion, solidifying its leading role in managing some of the nations most secretive intelligence networks.
Those two companies, in addition to Google and Oracle, are now competing to win components of $9 billion in contracts for the JEDI successor, known as the [Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability](https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/3239378/department-of-defense-announces-joint-warfighting-cloud-capability-procurement/). Competition for the bulk of that pie is now in full swing, with roughly $1 billion awarded mostly this year, and Amazon named to some early Navy and Marine Corps work.
John Sherman, who retired this year as the Defense Departments chief information officer to become dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, said the Joint Warfighting contracts, or JWCC, were seen as a bridge to longer-term contracts managing Defense Department cloud-computing systems. The four companies are like athletes, he said, “pushing each other to get better.”
The jousting among the four for the JWCC work — as well as possibly lengthier, more lucrative follow-ons — will play out under the next president, Sherman said. The victors will then be able to use the government contracts as calling cards to win over additional corporate clients.
Jassy, in announcing the companys [quarterly earnings](https://s2.q4cdn.com/299287126/files/doc_financials/2024/q2/AMZN-Q2-2024-Earnings-Release.pdf) in August, said Amazon was making progress across a number of fronts “but perhaps none more so” than Amazon Web Services growth. AWS accounted for 17 percent of Amazons $148 billion in total revenue last quarter but an outsize $9.3 billion, or 63 percent, of its total profits.
As AWS has buoyed the companys bottom line, helping to push Amazon stock to record highs, Bezos sold roughly $8.5 billion worth of shares in February and in July [disclosed plans](https://www.reuters.com/business/jeff-bezos-sell-amazon-shares-worth-about-5-bln-after-stock-hits-record-high-2024-07-03/) to sell about $5 billion more. After the sales, he would own nearly 9 percent of the company.
Whether at Amazon or Blue Origin, Bezos has been willing to go toe to toe with the government to defend his business empires interests in Washington, noted former employees, who pointed to litigation challenging unfavorable contracting decisions by the government — under Trump as well as Biden.
Bezos was closely involved in the response to losing out on the initial NASA award for the lunar lander in 2021, said a former Blue Origin employee, and the litigation, while unsuccessful, showed he was “not pandering to the customer.”
“With Jeff, its always only about business,” said the former employee. “Its business, period. Thats how he built Amazon. Thats how he runs all of his enterprises.”
