La destinée de Frédéric II de Hohenstaufen (1194-1250) a inspiré deux maîtres livres : l'exceptionnel ouvrage d'Ernst Kantorowicz et cette biographie, vite devenue un classique. Comme si Jacques Benoist-Méchin, grand connaisseur de l'Islam et de l'Allemagne, avait trouvé le héros qui incarnait ses rêves d'historien. Voilà un empereur couronné à Rome qui déteste le pape, s'intéresse à l'Islam et n'envisage de croisade que pacifique et diplomatique. Voilà aussi un souverain d'une immense culture, parlant plusieurs langues, réunissant à Palerme, sa résidence favorite, des savants juifs, musulmans et chrétiens, favorisant les arts et les sciences. Au fond, un homme trop grand pour son temps, deux fois excommunié par Grégoire IX, surnommé par ses contemporains l'Antéchrist et condamné à l'oubli après sa mort, tant le Saint-Siège ne cessa de vouloir effacer son œuvre et son nom.
